Tuhinj Valley
TheTuhinj Valley(pronounced[tuˈxiːn];Slovene:Tuhinjska dolina) is a valley inSlovenialinking theCelje Basinwith theLjubljana Basinin an east-west direction along the courses of theNevljicaand Motnišnica rivers.
Geography
[edit]The western part of the valley was formed by thewatershedof theNevljica,flowing into theKamnik Bistrica,and the narrower, eastern part by the Motnišnica, a tributary of theSavinja River.Theirdrainage divideis at the Kozjak Pass at anelevationof 655 m betweenCirkuše v TuhinjuandŠpitalič.The largest settlements in the valley includeLaze v Tuhinju,Šmartno v Tuhinju,andMotnik.The large number of old settlements points to the fact that the valley was an importantthoroughfarein theMiddle Agesand later as a passage betweenLower StyriaandUpper Carniola.
Name
[edit]The Tuhinj region was mentioned in written sources circa 1400 asTuchein,Tuchen,andTucheiner alben.The name was originally*Tuxyn′ь,derived from thehypocorism*Tuxynъ(based on the Slavic personal name*Tuxъor*Tuxa). This root is also the source of similar names such asTuhinjein Herzegovina,Tuinin Macedonia,Tukhinin Russia, andTuchyňain Slovakia.[1]
Industry
[edit]Until the mid-20th centurybrown coalwas mined in the valley nearMotnik.Tourism has only recently started to develop with the building of theSnovik Spa.[2]
