Tuzemák,formerly calledTuzemský rum(English:domestic rumor potato rum), is a traditionalCzechdistilled beverage.It is asubstitute good(ersatz) for truerumwhich is produced fromsugarcanemainly in theCaribbeanandLatin America.Since the 19th century, Tuzemák became one of the most popular spirits in theCzech lands.[1]
Tuzemský is produced frompotatoesorsugar beets,diluted and flavoured by various rumessences.In the 19th century similar substitutes were produced throughout thecrown landsof theAustro-Hungarianmonarchy, which had no access to tropicalcolonies;they were namedInländer-Rum(the best-known example of this is probablyStrohinAustria),DomačiorČajni(Croatia) etc.
EUregulations allow the name "rum" to be applied only to products made from sugarcane. As a result, from 1 January 2003, this product is sold under other names like "Tuzemák" or "Tuzemský".[2]
