Iowa(SSN-797),aVirginia-classsubmarine,will be the fourth U.S. Navy vessel named for the state ofIowa.Secretary of the NavyRay Mabusofficially announced the name on September 2, 2015, during a news briefing atIowa State University.[5]
Construction and career
[edit]Iowa'skeel was laid downon 20 August 2019 at the Quonset Point Facility ofGeneral Dynamics Electric Boatin North Kingstown, Rhode Island.[2]She waschristenedon 17 June 2023 byChristie Vilsack,the boat'ssponsorand formerFirst ladyof Iowa.[4][6]
