Construction and commissioning

LST-556was laid down on 4 February 1944 atEvansville,Indiana,by theMissouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company.She waslaunchedon 7 April 1944, sponsored by Mrs. James C. Bradshaw, andcommissionedon 1 May 1944.

Service history

DuringWorld War II,LST-556was assigned to thePacific Theater of Operations.She participated in thecapture and occupationof the southernPalau Islandsin September and October 1944. She then took part in thePhilippines campaign,participating in theLeyte landingsin October and November 1944, thelandingsatOrmoc Bayin December 1944, thelandingsatMindoroin December 1944, and the landings atZambalesandSubic Bayin January 1945. She then participated in theassault on and occupationofOkinawaGunto in April and May 1945.

Following the war,LST-556returned to theUnited States.

Decommissioning and disposal

LST-556wasdecommissionedon 14 March 1946 and stricken from theNavy Liston 12 April 1946. On 26 April 1948, she was sold to theSun Shipbuilding and Drydock CompanyofChester,Pennsylvania,for scrapping.
