USSPlumas County(LST-1083)was anLST-542-classtank landing shipin theUnited States Navy.Unlike many of her class, which received only numbers and were disposed of afterWorld War II,she survived long enough to be named. On 1 July 1955, all LSTs still in commission were named for UScountiesorparishes;LST-1083was given the namePlumas County,afterPlumas County, California.
She was built inAmbridge, Pennsylvaniaby theAmerican Bridge Company,and was launched on 14 January 1945. She passed through thePanama Canaland saw combat action atMidway,Wake Island,theMarshall Islands,Guam,Saipan,theMariana Islands,Leytein thePhilippines,andOkinawa.
She was the first LST to drop anchor in Japanese waters afterthe atom bombwas dropped, and was present at thesigning of the Japanese surrender.
She returned toSan Franciscoafter the war, and was decommissioned in August 1946. She was recommissioned on 8 September 1950 and served in theKorean War,finally returning to California in July 1954. She was namedPlumas Countyon 1 July 1955 and spent the rest of her career operating off California, and in the Pacific, carrying out joint amphibious exercises withNationalist ChinaandSouth Korea.She was placed inreserveatSaseboon 22 August 1961, and was transferred to theMilitary Sea Transportation Servicein December 1965.
Plumas Countyearned onebattle starduringWorld War IIand three battle stars during the Korean War.
