USSSampson(DDG-102)is anArleigh Burke-classdestroyerin theUnited States Navy.Funding for the Flight IIA (5 "/62, one 20mm CIWS variant) ship was authorized in 2002 and herkeelwaslaidon 20 March 2005. She is the fourth US Navy ship named to honor Rear AdmiralWilliam T. Sampson.

She was built byBath Iron WorksinBath, Maine.At her christening on 16 September 2006, the principal address was delivered bySenatorSusan CollinsofMaine,and the vessel was christened by Clara Parsons, great-granddaughter of Rear Admiral Sampson and daughter ofWilliam Sterling Parsons,as the ship's sponsor.

History

She was commissioned inBoston, Massachusettson 3 November 2007 and home ported inSan Diego.Her maiden deployment was from August 2009 to March 2010 to the Western Pacific and Persian Gulf as part of theNimitzcarrier strike group(CSG).

AfterSampsonreturned from an 8-month maiden deployment, she was back underway from May to August with port visits to the 103rdPortland Rose FestivalandEsquimalt, British Columbiato celebrate the 100th anniversary of theRoyal Canadian Navy.She then participated inExercise RIMPACoff the coast ofHawaii.Sampson's crew was awarded twoSea Service Ribbonsin 12 months.[1]

In August 2011Sampsonpulled into South Harbor inSeattle, Washington,to participate in Seattle'sSeafaircelebration. In September,Sampsondispatched an inflatable boat and swimmers to retrieve about 60 bales of assorted drugs from the ocean after a small boat dumped them overboard. After that the ship participated inUSSAbraham Lincoln's Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX), in preparation for an independent deployment.[1]In February 2012Sampsondeparted San Diego for a scheduled deployment to the western Pacific and Middle East. In July,Sampsonparticipated in at-sea phase of Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT)Singapore.[1]

On 29 December 2014,Sampsonwas dispatched to theJava Seato search forIndonesia AirAsia Flight 8501that disappeared the day before.[2]

In 2016 the ship remained assigned toDestroyer Squadron 23,working withCarrier Strike Group 11.[3]She arrived at her new homeport,Naval Station Everettin Washington, on 26 September 2016.[4]

TheRoyal New Zealand Navy(RNZN) invited the United States Navy to send a vessel to participate in the RNZN's 75th Birthday Celebrations inAucklandover the weekend of 19–21 November 2016.Sampsonwas the first US warship to visitNew Zealandin 33 years since theNew Zealand nuclear-free zonecame into effect and the US suspended its obligations to New Zealand under theANZUStreaty. New Zealand Prime MinisterJohn Keygranted approval for the ship's visit under theNew Zealand's anti-nuclear law,which requires that the Prime Minister has to be satisfied that any visiting ship is not nuclear armed or powered. Soon after arriving in New Zealand, a magnitude 7.8earthquakestruckKaikōura.Sampsonalong with other navy ships from Australia, Canada, Japan and Singapore were dispatched directly to the area to provide humanitarian assistance.[5][6]

On 3 October 2017,Sampsondeparted her homeport for a scheduled deployment with theTheodore RooseveltCSG.[7]She returned 9 May 2018 after seven months.[8]

In January 2022,Sampsonresponded toTongato provide assistance following theHunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai eruption and tsunami.[9]

In May 2022,Sampsonwas a part ofDestroyer Squadron 2,along withCarrier Strike Group 3led by theUSSAbraham Lincoln.[10]

Sampsonparticipated inRIMPAC2022.[11]

  • The ship is featured in the 2012 filmBattleshipwhere she is destroyed and sunk by aliens during the intense combat in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii with her sister shipUSSJohn Paul Jones.
