Construction

Wayne E. Meyeris the 58th destroyer in her class. She was built byBath Iron Works,and was christened by sponsor Anna Mae Meyer, wife of Admiral Meyer, andlaunchedon 18 October 2008. She completed sea trials in June 2009, and was delivered to the Navy in July 2009.[1]She wascommissionedon theDelaware River,inPhiladelphia,Pennsylvania, on 10 October 2009.

Wayne E. Meyermade her maiden deployment as part of theJohn C. StennisCarrier Strike Group(CSG) from 29 July 2011 until 27 February 2012. She made port calls inMalaysia,Japan,South Korea,Thailand,Bahrain,Dubai,and thePhilippines.[citation needed]

In January 2017,Wayne E. Meyer,and hersister shipMichael Murphy,were part ofDestroyer Squadron 1,and along withLake ChamplainandCarl VinsonformedCarrier Strike Group One(CSG-1), during a deployment to the western Pacific. In April of that year, CSG-1 cancelled a scheduled port call in Australia, in response to increasing tensions between the United States andNorth Koreaover the latter's nuclear weapons program.[3]

In September 2018Wayne E. MeyerandO'Kanecompleted homeport swaps.Wayne E. Meyerarrived atJoint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickamon 13 September, andO'Kanegot underway for her new homeport of San Diego.[citation needed]
