Ur(French:[yʁ];Catalan:Ur,['urr]) is acommunein thePyrénées-Orientalesdepartmentin southernFrance.
Toponymy[edit]
The name of the village is attested in the formHuras early as 839 AD, and is ofpre-Indo-Europeanorigin, coming from theUr-Or-Arroot - quite common in thePyrenees- which designates a place where there is a spring or a river; thepre-Celticroot*Ur-still means "water" inBasque.Despite local folklore, there is no known relation to the city-state ofUrwhich is mentioned in theBible.
Geography[edit]
Ur is located in thecanton of Les Pyrénées catalanesand in thearrondissement of Prades.Ur-Les Escaldes stationhas rail connections to Villefranche-de-Conflent and Latour-de-Carol.
