Steps in translation

[edit]
Content translation tool tutorial

You are not logged in, so youare not extended confirmedYour accountis extended confirmedis not extended confirmed.

NOTE: Thecontent translation toolis limited toextended confirmed users.
A registered editor becomesextendedconfirmedautomatically when the account is both at least 30 days oldandhas made at least 500 edits (including deleted edits).
  1. OpenSpecial:ContentTranslation.Note that you may need to choose theTry it Now!link.
    • Click on
      + New translation
    • Paste the article name from the article to be translated.
    • On the right of that field, click on whatever
      language
is displayed, then input the language from which you will translate.
    • Click on
      Start translation
  2. Give it a draft name butdo not publish it yet.
    • It will automatically save your work until you are ready to publish, for up to a year.
    • If you are the only one working on it, or are comfortable with others editing your usersubpagesin yourSpecial:Mypage/sandbox,consider naming itUser:<Your user name>/sandbox/<article name>.Please seeWikipedia:About the sandboxfor sandbox help.
    • If multiple editors will be working on this, consider targeting theDraft namespace, such as naming itDraft:<article name>.
    • Click on theicon and choose the destination description.
    • Do not publish a draft into the(Main/Article) namespace! Not ready for primetimearticles usually becomespeedy deletions. It is much harder to create an article after it has been deleted. To have a translation meet this fate is a waste of effort and time for all concerned.
  3. Begin translating
    • Note that translating most templates between languages will not work. You may try, but you may need to delete or greatly modify most faulty template translations, then add the correct template or corrections after publishing the draft. Sometimes a corresponding template does not exist in English Wikipedia.
    • Hover in the English column to the right of the heading, paragraph, or image you wish to translate, then click on
      + Add translation
    • An untranslated copy will appear in the right column. Translate it if you are able, or use a machine translator such ashttps://translate.google.comto copy translated text and paste over the untranslated text.
      • Correct obvious errors. For instance, many machine translators misgender third person or possessive pronouns.
      • Sometimes translating and reading the citations can help decipher an otherwise non-intelligible machine translation.
      • When in doubt, consider leaving it out if it is not core to the article and you cannot make sense of it.
      • Consider asking for help at theWikipedia:Local Embassy
    • Wikilinkwhen and where you are able.
    • Keep the original page open in another tab, so that you may click on Wikilinks or categories that do not make sense in translation. Sometimes there is a corresponding English article or an English name in the corresponding Wikidata item. Note links to articles that have no corresponding English articles; one can later use the{{Interlanguage link}}or{{ill}}template for these.
  4. When you have reasonably completed translating all headings, paragraphs, images, and categories, and have entered your user sandbox or draft name, then click on
    Publish
A message will appear towards the top:
YesYPage published at<the draft or user sandbox and article name>
Click on the link to open the draft article.
  5. Remove links that do not adhere to English Wikipedia guidelines.
  6. Work the templates that did not translate
    • Infobox templates
      • Consider placing or substituting{{Infobox person/Wikidata||qid=<Wikidata QID>|fetchwikidata=ALL}}.This may satisfy most of your{{Infobox person}}needs. You may then add any other parameters as necessary.
      • Go to the the article in the original language, choose "Edit source", and copy the Infobox template code then paste it into a text editor. Back out or close your editing session in the original language article.
      • Paste the Infobox code into a machine translatorhttps://translate.google.com.Copy the output and paste it into a text editor.
      • Go to the Infobox template page in the original language, and see if there is a corresponding English template.[i]
      • If editing the sourceWikitext:
      • As appropriate, copy either theblank template with basic parametersor theblank template with all parametersinto a text editor.
      • Based upon the machine translation of the Infobox template code from the original language, populate the English template code as best as possible, then save.
      • If using Visual Editor:
        • On your draft page, click on the Infobox template. A dialog box will appear.
    edit

    Generated from: <template name>
    Click on
    edit
    • Populate the name if not already populated.
    • Click onAdd more information. Some fields will be suggested; if you wish to get a different field, you may search for it or you can display all the fields. Based upon the machine translation of the Infobox template code from the original language, populate the available fields as best as possible, then publish.
  • Alternately, if there is no Infobox template, you can create one by positioning your cursor where it will go vertically, then use theInsert ⌵pull-down menu, then choose theTemplate and type in the template name. SeeWikipedia:VisualEditor/User guide#Editing templatesfor more.
  • Other templatesmay be translated similarly to Infobox templates
  1. Finishing touches
  • On the draft article's talk page:
    • ***Most important!***Place the{{Translated page}}template. The syntax for this is:
      {{translated page|SourceLanguageCode|SourcePageTitle|small=no}}.
    • For biographies, add{{WikiProject Biography|living=yes|class=Draft|listas=}}if in your User talknamespaceor{{WikiProject Biography|living=yes|class=|listas=}}if in the Draft talk namespace. Adding|class=Draftwill force it to be listed inCategory:Draft-Class biography articlesif in the User talk namespace. Inclusion inCategory:Draft-Class biography articlesis automatic if it is in the Draft talk namespace. The|listas=should be poplulated with theLastName, FirstName, same as the DEFAULTSORT listed below for the draft article page.
    • Following the example above, add additional WikiProject banners as well. For more about WikiProject banners, seeWikipedia:Template index/WikiProject bannersandWikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide § Tagging pages with WikiProject banners.
    • If you have more than a couple of WikiProject banners, enclose them within the{{WikiProjectBannerShell}}.The syntax for this is to put{{WikiProjectBannerShell|1=on a blank line before the first WikiProject banner, and}}on a blank line after the last WikiProject banner.
  • On the draft article page:
    • Add the{{Authority control}}template. The syntax for this is:{{Authority control|qid=<Wikidata QID>}}.The QID parameter/value can be removed once the draft is moved to the article namespace.
    • For biographies, add the {{DEFAULTSORT}}magic word.The syntax for this is:{{DEFAULTSORT:LastName, FirstName}}
    • The draft may have insertednowiki tags,<nowiki>and</nowiki>that enclose categories and prevent categorization of draft pages. If not, add them. Add any additional categories in between these nowiki tags until you publish the article, at which point you should remove them.
  • If the article is in good shape, move it into the article space or submit it for review. If not, continue to improve it until it is ready.
  • Return the favor:If you have discovered any citations, images, or missing bits of information that are not in the original language article(s), please consider inserting them if you can.
