October lichen task force newsletter

[edit]
SYMBIOSIS: Thelichen task forcenewsletter— October 2022
A look at what we've accomplished, working together

As a subset of WP:FUNGI, thelichen task forceis working to improve coverage of the world's lichens – unique organisms composed of one or more fungal partners with one or more photosynthetic partners. A growing body of evidence suggests that some of the roughly 1000secondary metabolitesproduced by various lichens may prove instrumental in our ongoing battle against harmful pathogens. Want to learn more? Join us!

Articles of note

Esculentahas nominated two articles for GA:

Solorina crocea
  • Verrucariaceae– a family of mostly lichenized fungi found primarily on rocks and soil in the Northern Hemisphere
  • Solorina crocea– also known as "orange chocolate chip lichen", this was one of the first lichen species to be formally scientifically described

Project news

It's been another busy month for the task force. Among the accomplishments:

  • We've tagged another 700 articles, categories and templates as being under the purview of the task force.
  • Importance levels have now been set for nearly all of the task force's articles.
  • Thousands of articles have been tagged with lichen class/order/genus/species categories as appropriate.
  • Work has continued on converting those articles which still using old "taxobox" templates to the newer automatic taxobox and speciesbox templates. There are now fewer than 95 left to modify.
  • MerielGJoneshas created articles for a number of important lichenologists, includingJames D. Lawrey,Thomas George Allan Green,Pier Luigi Nimis,Hannes Hertel,Ludger Kappen, andChristian Leuckert.Esculentaadded one forGeorges Clauzade.
  • Dozens of articles have been created for genera and species of lichen and lichenicolous fungi.
  • Theoutline of lichensis now almost completely referenced.
  • Work has continued on theDraft:Glossary of lichen terms, which will hopefully be ready to move into main space within the month.
Lichen news
  • Arecent studystrongly suggests that industrialforestry, along with the introduction of nitrogen, is the main cause of lichen declines in Norway spruce forests. This decline has resulted in "cascading effects on biodiversity and function of boreal forest canopies", according to the study's authors.

New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

[edit]

Hello Dr vulpes,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. Theopen letterfinished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in thecurrent issue ofThe Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards:Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks toMPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went toJohn B123for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ( "one-a-day" ), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on theAwards page.Check out the newHall of Famealso.

Software news:Novem LinguaeandMPGuy2824have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recentlyhere.Thereviewer reporthas also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder:an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more.(from theNPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • Thisuser scriptputs a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with theOctober backlog driveto under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023

[edit]

Hello Dr vulpes,

New Page Review queue December 2022
Backlog

The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations toWaddlesJP13who led with 2084 points. Seethis pagefor further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.

2022 Awards

Onel5969won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar.Rosguillled again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see theAwards pageand theHall of Fame.Congratulations everyone!

Minimum deletion time:The previousWP:NPPguideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification andWP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in thefeedare now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script:In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendlyexplanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit yourcommon.jsor vector.js file fromUser:Evad37/MoveToDraft.jstoUser:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Redirects:Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, seethis guide, this checklist, and spend some time atWP:RFD.

Discussions with the WMFThePageTriage open lettersigned by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitteddozens of patchesin the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such asNovem LinguaeandMPGuy2824have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team alsohad a video conferencewith the NPP coordinators to discussrevamping the landing pagesthat new users see.

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take thisshort pollabout the newsletter.
  • There is live chat with patrollers on theNew Page Patrol Discord.

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

[edit]

Hello Dr vulpes,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive:In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with23851reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to0(momentarily). Congratulations toHey man im joshwho led with a staggering 4316 points, followed byMeenaandGreyzxqwith 2868 and 2546 points respectively. Seethis pagefor more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol:All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for themhere.

WMF work on PageTriage:TheWMF Moderator Tools team, consisting ofSam,JasonandSusana, and also some patches fromJon,has been hard at workupdating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-inbeta testwhere new page patrollers can help test the rewrite ofSpecial:NewPagesFeed,to help find bugs. We will post more details atWT:NPPRwhen we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC):All new page reviewers are nowautomatically approvedfor Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply atWT:AFCPlike was required previously). To install theAFC helper script, visitSpecial:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visitSpecial:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow atWP:AFCR.It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget thatdraftspace is optional,so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip:Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their ownSNG?The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists isWP:ARTIST4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Question fromCaroline Ju(17:50, 3 September 2024)

[edit]

Hello,

Can you help me publish a new page about an artist that I think ought to have one? I've edited it and it says it's been published but I'm not sure it has. And I'd like to add some more images. --Caroline Ju(talk)17:51, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Caroline Jusure I can help you. What page is it?Dr vulpes(Talk)17:59, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It was about a potter called Audrey Richardson but I don't think it has registered.Caroline Ju(talk)18:09, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok @Caroline Juso I checked and didn't see an article for them on Wikipedia, first thing you should do is check and see if they're notable. If they're not notable there's a chance the article will be deleted. So review this pageWikipedia:Notability (people),if you think they're notable then start a draft of that article. This will let you take your time and work on the article. So you can find sources you need and make sure everything else is correct. You learn all about starting a draft article at this pageWikipedia:Drafts. If you have any questions or need a hand just leave me a message here. I live in California so it's my work time right now so if I don't respond quickly don't worry I'll be back online in about 5-6 hours.Dr vulpes(Talk)18:15, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks a lot: I suppose notability is to a certain extent in the mind of the observer! But I'll look at the rules and get back to you.Caroline Ju(talk)19:25, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Dr vulpes

Can you review my pageDraft:Almohad conquest of Evora (1191) - Wikipedia.Tahanido(talk)19:42, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Tahanidosorry I had to work late tonight but it appears that someone else was able to review it for you. Thanks for thinking of me!Dr vulpes(Talk)04:52, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem Sir @Dr vulpesthanks anywayTahanido(talk)08:25, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there. I note you PRODed this one. Do you not think the fact he has appeared as a significant character in several notable shows for multiple episodes meets WP:NACTOR? I tend not to remove PRODs, especially from experienced editors. Just asking though, as I'd have marked this one as approved. —MaxnaCarta(💬📝)00:45, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @MaxnaCartaso before I PRODed the article I didWP:BEFOREon Google, Newspapers.com and Archive.org and nothing was coming up. I checked sources in the article and they don't appear to beWP:INDEPENDENT.Also at the same time I'm not in Europe so it's possible that there's material in European newspapers that I don't have access to or Irish language materials. That's why I did a PROD and not an AfD, I put in some work and couldn't find anything that I would supportWP:NACTOR.If you have some ideas of where to find material for the article let me know and I'll pull the PROD and add them. I really dislike removing articles when there could be sources that exist but I can't access due to language or geography or my own lack of knowledge. And because it's the internet I promise I'm being sincere and not sarcastic or anything mean like that.Dr vulpes(Talk)04:50, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah fair enough! Honestly, I am checking my own thought process rather than yours. I tend to be more lenient and give the benefit of doubt to actors who have a good filmography, films that exist and were professionally made, etc. And then very stringent in applying the SNG/GNG for things like ANYBIO, PRODUCT, or NCORP etc —MaxnaCarta(💬📝)05:14, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for deletion/Jay Anson

[edit]

I found citations for theAfD on Jay Ansonso I'm pinging you as you requested. Do you think the citations are enough to prove notability? If you feel they are enough, let me know and I can add them to the article.SouthernNights(talk)15:59, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

R2-D2: Beneath the Dome

[edit]

I saw your note about expanding the redirect for "R2D2: Beneath the Dome" into a full article. The full article was previously deleted for lack of notability. Here's an archive of the debate discussing it.Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/R2-D2: Beneath the DomeI added the redirect because it's better than no results.Baron Crimson(talk)01:09, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Roman Orus Article Draft

[edit]

Hi Dr vulpes,

I'm working on a draft for Prof. Roman Orus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Roman_Orus), a researcher cited inTensor network,an article you edited.

The draft has been rejected due to lack of notability. Do you have any advice for the construction of the draft and getting the article approved?

Thanks,

CBathka(talk)10:04, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @CBathka,I would review the notability guidelines which can be found hereWP:NPROF.In general I dislike it when an academic or author has a list of all their publications. If the person’s work is outside my own academic training it makes it harder for me to figure out if these publications are notable or fluff. It’s better to have a short article that highlights notable achievements of a person using good secondary sources than to just have a really big article.
Take a look at the notability guidelines and if you have more questions just leave me a message here and I’ll try to help if I can.Dr vulpes(Talk)00:15, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Dr_vulpes,I incorporated your feedback after reviewing the notability guidelines. Prof Orus meets the first criterion for his work on quantum tensor networks, so I added that to the overview and academic career. I also removed the list of selected publications. Please take a look at the most recent version and let me know what you think.CBathka(Talk)11:37, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Dr vulpes,I've made even more changes to the draft (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Roman_Orus) and was hoping you could give it a quick review. Thank you again!CBathka(talk)01:59, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Dr vulpes. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion ofLiga Indonesia Premier Division,a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: there are reasonable mainspace targets, and the currently targeted draft bounces back to one of the mainspace options. Hi,Dr vulpes!I wanted to check in to let you know that I reviewed your G4 nomination for Thejo Kumari Amudala. Request for Guidance on Page Revisions

[edit]

Dear Dr Vulpes,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the remarkable work you do, especially given the volume of contributions you handle on Wikipedia. I greatly appreciate your expertise.

I understand my recent submission did not meet the necessary criteria, and I would really value your guidance on how I can revise it to align with Wikipedia's standards. I believe the subject meets the notability guidelines, but I'd love to know how I can improve the page for reconsideration.

Would you be open to sharing any specific areas that need attention? I would really appreciate your insights. The relevant page link is as follows: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Mark_Manduca_(investment_professional)

Thank you for your time, and I hope to hear from you soon. Best regards, KaleemCIOFSM(talk)19:29, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @CIOFSM,I went and edited out some of the unsourced material for example you listed his birthday but none of the sources had a birthday for him. And you listed his parents but none of the sources list them as being related so I removed that as well. When looking for sources try and find things like newpaper interviews where he's the main subject of the article. There are a lot of articles where he was on TV talking about COVID-19 which are fine but the other articles are just rehashes of the same press release. They're fine but that was really all I could find for him. See if you can find some more material and feel free to ping me here if you get stuck or when you submit your draft again and I'll review it for you.Dr vulpes(Talk)23:09, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest?

[edit]

Hey, you reverted me, and then apparently added some COI material here:https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Adam_and_Eve_in_Mormonism&diff=prev&oldid=1247815379

That user was banned for adding himself to articles, why did you add it back? Why are you allowed to add content that breaks policy?Thomas C Sharp(talk)04:53, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Thomas C Sharp,did you have a source for this? I see that the user was blocked but I can't see why.Dr vulpes(Talk)05:01, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is a big ANI thread. The user who added this content is the author listed. A lot was cleaned up, it seems a lot wasn't.Thomas C Sharp(talk)05:02, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
o cool yeah some of that older stuff is hard to find, would you mind linking me to it?Dr vulpes(Talk)05:03, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you trolling me? You don't know how to use the search feature? You also reverted the addition of Better source needed tags after primary sources. Why? Are primary sources appropriate?Thomas C Sharp(talk)05:13, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No I figured you had just read it so it would be easy for you to find. I'll go dig it up later when I have time.Dr vulpes(Talk)05:16, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here it is, I ask that you stop adding conflict of interest material to Wikipedia. I'm not going to template you,but really, why would you add COI material and remove BSN tags from primary sources? Please readWP:RS[1]Thomas C Sharp(talk)05:18, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there - can you explain why you thought the consensus onWikipedia:Articles for deletion/IMOCA 60 Initiative Coeur 4was "keep"? There were two participants, one!voting for keep and one the nominator. Not sure why it had to be closed by a non-admin in the first place. Thanks -Dclemens1971(talk)02:08, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

damn it I'm an idiot, I misread your last line and though that you were withdrawing the nomination. I'll message an admin to clean up my mistake. Sorry @Dclemens1971no clue how that one got past me.Dr vulpes(Talk)02:11, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Dclemens1971fixed it, again super sorry.Dr vulpes(Talk)02:13, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, I think you can just revert your changes on the three pages -- don't think any admin action is necessary. I still don't think the sources added provide sufficient sigcov or independence or else I would have withdrawn and closed already.Dclemens1971(talk)02:13, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For sure, thanks for being cool about this and for pointing it out to me professionally.Dr vulpes(Talk)02:16, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Huh?

Hey @Liz,here's what happened. So when that AfD started to get a little heated I remembered seeing Ginger Alden mentioned in some of the sources I had added to the Anita Wood article. So I looked into Ginger Alden since there was a conversation about her not being notable. After a quick search on Archive.org one of the top results was a book she released a few months after the previous AfD closed. Since it had a few reviews and she qualified as a notable author I rewrote the article with some other sources and pushed it to main. Then when I went back to the AfD it had gotten really heated and I felt that if I had said anything about the new article at best it would make me look like a smug jerk and at worst it could look or feel like bullying. So I figured the best path forward was to wait until the AfD was finished, reach out to people who might be interested in article, and try to move forward in a productive manner. If I had checked the AfD before pushing the Ginger Alden article to main I would have kept it in draft until after the AfD. I'm sorry if this was against some rule or guideline, I meant no ill intent. I honestly was just trying to expand off the previous work I had done for the Anita Wood article and with a fairly clearWP:NAUTHORI felt it wouldn't be that big of a deal or effort. If you would like I can rollback the article to the redirect until the AfD is finished or if there are any other actions/processes you feel that would be productive and fair I'm more then willing to do so. I'll defer to your judgment on this matter since you deal with this area a lot more than I do and the last thing I want is to cause problems for the community.Dr vulpes(Talk)17:32, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your closure of the move discussion of the Wikiproject

[edit]

Hi, Thanks for taking the time and closing of the Wikiproject LGBTQ+ requested move discussion and summarizing it for all with a well rounded closure summary. Are you going to execute the move yourself or ask an admin to perform it?Raladic(talk)06:33, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Raladic,thanks for checking in. I posted the requestfor an admin move.If I don't see a change by tomorrow I'll lightly pester someone.Dr vulpes(Talk)07:03, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
