March Madness 2017

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running itsMarch Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be foundherefor those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

For the Milhist co-ordinators. Regards,AustralianRupert(talk) &MediaWiki message delivery(talk)07:24, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Guisborough Helmet site pic

[edit]

Hi Prioryman, sorry to bother you... in your useful pichereof the bridge abutments where the helmet was found, can I just ask you please: (1) is it taken abouthere, which would mean that (2) the house that looks as if it ends the road is actually on that LH bendbeforethe farm, and (3) is it publicly accessible or do you get shouted at by angry farmers etc? Streetview only just turns the corner into the road and there's a sign but I can't see if it says"enter and die"or"all welcome, the kettle's on"... I was thinking on some future visit to the area I should go look. Likewise, having only really started thinking about the helmet I should go and look at it at the BM! All info gratefully received, cheers,DBaK(talk)23:06, 4 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's not a great picture I'm afraid, I took it near dusk so the light wasn't good, but I'm glad it was useful. To answer your questions: (1) you've got the location exactly right - the pic was taken just south of the abutments; (2) not sure what you mean; starting at the junction with the roundabout, the road runs past a garden nursery, does a sharp right-turn and finishes at Barnaby Grange Farm, past the abutments; (3) yes, it's publicly accessible; the road is actually a fragment of the old Guisborough-Middlesbrough road that was replaced by the present dual carriageway just to the south. There's not actually much to see at the site and since there is no public access beyond the farm it's a dead end both by car and on foot. The helmet itself is well worth seeing though, I saw it in the BM only a couple of weeks ago.Prioryman(talk)06:55, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well if I am ever up there with good camera and better lighting I might try to improve on it but don't hold your breath! Yours is just fine. Thanks very much for the replies - that's most encouraging. Sorry about (2) being confusing: I meant that when I looked at your photo I initially believed that it depicted a straight road which simply terminated at that house, but I see now that that was wrong. This has been very interesting for me - it's over on the "wrong" side of town for me although we would, I am sure, have driven along that old road towards Middlesbrough many times before it was dualled. I'm now ridiculously excited about the helmet and will definitely have to go and admire it down the road here! Thanks again for your kind response - it's been most interesting and enlightening. CheersDBaK(talk)18:15, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

2017 Attack and Lee Rigby

[edit]

Just to let you know that Rigby wasn't the last previous attack: the2015 Leytonstone tube station attackwas the last proper attack, and the 2016 IED at Greenwich the last "incident" (police terminology for all events, whether leading to loss of life or not). -The Bounder(talk)11:51, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Leytonstone wasn't a terrorist attack. The perpetrator was mentally ill, and he was tried for attempted murder, not terrorism. See[1].The 2016 Greenwich IED incidentmayalso be related to mental illness, but in any case the accused perpetrator has not been charged with an act of terrorism.[2]Prioryman(talk)11:56, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I just don't understand why the IP user can not be civil at all. I have been trying to help. Even with the information provided by another user. There is still an issue.Reb1981(talk)21:36, 31 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I know what you mean. Some people are just very difficult to deal with, I'm afraid.Prioryman(talk)21:40, 31 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We need more to chime in. I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall.Reb1981(talk)09:35, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The IP user does seem to be rather resistant to persuasion. I'm not too concerned about it though; there is clearly a consensus against the IP user's views. Page protection will expire in a couple of days. When it does, if the IP user tries to resume edit-warring it will be against consensus and there will then be a good case to either block them or make the page semi-protected so that they can't edit it.Prioryman(talk)10:36, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So the IP is a LTA case? I just saw that. Same exact behavor, too. I just don't understand people, but I am glad that we are past that.Reb1981(talk)00:05, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DearPrioryman, scouting through the Art/Architecture GANs, I came across this. It's beautifully written and a great pleasure to read. Can I raise two issues before embarking on a GAR. Both relate to the Holder source. First, the link is broken. This is critical, as it's the main source. Which brings me to my second issue - its status as a PHD. Obviously, theses can be used, as perScholarship.Do you have any more information on it? Was it published/peer reviewed etc.? Has it been cited? Do we know the status of the supervisor? I'd very much like to pick it up as a GAR but am fairly new to this area and haven't previously undertaken one where the main source was a PHD. I'd appreciate any further information, and the restoration of the broken link. An impressive, and eclectic, array of FAs, by the way! All the best.KJP1(talk)20:30, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not to worry! It's just moved to a different server and can be found here[3].I've fixed the link. Please feel free to review it. Supervisor info etc ishere- the supervisor wasthis person, see alsoCaroline Barron. There's been plenty of citations in published workshere. The PPhD itself doesn't seem to have been published, which is rather a shame as I thought it was excellent.Prioryman(talk)21:00, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Much appreciated and very helpful. Unless someone else beats me to it, I shall pick it up just as soon as I finish the current GAR I'm doing. Thanks again and all the best.KJP1(talk)05:54, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thankyou for your participation in the challenge series or/and contests. In NovemberThe Women in Red World Contestis being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There will be over $4000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. If this would appeal to you and you think you'd be interested in contributing new articles on women during this month for your region or wherever please sign up in the participants section. The articles done may also count towards the ongoing challenge. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate and raise money to buy books about women for others to use, this is also fine. Help would also be appreciated in drawing up the lists of missing articles. If you think of any missing articles please add them to the sub lists by continent atMissing articles.Thankyou, and if taking part, good luck!♦Dr. Blofeld18:10, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, This image was seemingly uploaded prior to current image polices, Thank you.

However, as part of ongoing efforts to ensure all media on English Wikipedia is correctly licensed and attributed it would be appreciated if you were able to confirm, that it was your own work, by marking it as{{own}},amending the{{information}}added by a third party, and by changing the license to an appropriate "self" variant. You can also add|claimed=yesto the{{Media by uploader}}or{{Presumed self}}tag(s) if present to indicate that you've acknowledged the image, and license shown (and updated the{{information}}where appropriate).

IF you have other uploads, please consider "claiming" them in a similar manner, You can find a list of files you have createdhere.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

[edit]

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 theMilitary history Wikiprojectis running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members ofWikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red,and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign uphere.

Hi, I am going through indefinite talk page protections that seem old enough it may make sense to reconsider them, in a mostly chronological order. In this case this is aboutTalk:Keith Henson(logs). There seem to be no previous requests to reduce protection.
