Is there a find and replace function on Wikipedia?

[edit]

{{helpme}} I have the message "Cite error: There areCite error:A<ref>tag is missing the closing</ref>(see thehelp page).tag is. Is there a find and replace function on Wikipedia? --Firstmark Credit Union 20:59, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

There is no search/replace as such - just whatever your browser has. I use 'firefox', and therefore I can search/replace within the edit box. Alternatively, you can copy the whole text into notepad (or similar), use search/replace there, and then copy it all back. Don't use 'word' or something though, because it can mess up the formatting. Stick to a plain text editor.Chzz21:09, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have two warnings on my Firstmark Credit Union page: {{Article issues|refimprove=August 2009|primarysources=August 2009|tone=August 2009|coi=August 2009|advert=August 2009}} {{Cleanup-link rot|date=August 2009}} When is it appropriate to delete these messages? Can someone check my work before I do? I am REALLY trying to make this page great, so any advice is most appreciated! Thanks --Firstmark Credit Union 21:06, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

I will look at this question now, and reply more v soon.Chzz21:09, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Anybody can remove those tags, even you, once the issues have been cleared up in the article that the tags are on. I would suggest that you familiarize yourself with the issues by reading the links in those templates/tags, and then addressing them (if need be), and then removing them once you feel it is necessary. One of Wikipedia's "philosophies" is tobe boldin editing. If you have any further questions, please ask me on my talk page.:-)Killiondude(talk)21:38, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Firstly, a question: are you connected to the subject in some way, in business, or whatever? If not, skip this part. If so, then you have aconflict of interest,and thus it is very difficult to write a neutral, acceptable article. If this is the case, then we strongly recommend that you do not create the article. There are options available to create an appropriately sourced article in your user area, and then request that it is created. Please readthis essay on best practice,andthe business FAQ
Next - notability. In order to have an article on Wikipedia, the subject must meet the notability guidelines. The simplest, most important one isthe general notability guideline,which says a subject needssignificantcoverage inreliable sourcesthat areindependentof the subject. That carefully-worded phrase explains quite a lot;
"Significant coverage" - such as, a number of news articlesaboutthe article topic - not passing mentions
Reliable sources- well, this is defined in some detail inWP:RS,but the essence of it is - something that is generally trusted - such as the BBC, CNN, The New York Times. Books are good, too. Blog-sites are rarely reliable.
Independent- we don't useprimary sources,such as the persons own website, or their publishers/labels website, or anything like that. We avoid press-releases. We want secondary coverage - other people independently writing about the subject.
In the case of this article, looking on the internet, I am unable to find any appropriate sources, and therefore I think it will be difficult to establish notability. I'm sorry.:I suggest that you consider working on some other existing articles - perhaps something of interest.
I hope that you will continue to work on WIkipedia, and I assure you that I will help in any way I can. For more help, you can either;
  • Leave a message onmy own talk page;OR
  • Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end;OR
  • Talk to us live, withthisorthis.
Best wishes,

A tag has been placed onFirstmark Credit Union,requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under thecriteria for speedy deletion,because the article seems to be blatant advertising that only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please readthe general criteria for speedy deletion,particularly item 11, as well asthe guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this article is not blatant advertising, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add{{hangon}}on the top ofFirstmark Credit Unionand leave a note onthe article's talk pageexplaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would help make it encyclopedic, as well as adding anycitationsfrom independentreliable sourcesto ensure that the article will beverifiable.Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.Thinking of England(talk)01:36, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has beenblocked from editing Wikipediabecause it appears to be mainly intended or used for promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Because your account was used for promotion of a company, group, product or organization with a username that violatedusername policyas it promotes (or implies affiliation with) the aforementioned. This includes, but is not limited to:adding spam links,creating promotional pages(this includes user pages), adding advertisements to existing articles, andadding promotional/favorable content about something you are affiliated with.

Use of Wikipedia for promotion of people, products, companies or other groups (even non-commercial or charitable ones) is consideredspamand is forbidden. Such actions will result in the blocking of the account involved. Please readWikipedia:FAQ/OrganizationandWikipedia:Conflict of interestfor our policies about this.

In addition, user accounts are forindividuals only,not for companies or groups or other collective editing. Your username should reflect this. Usernames that appear to be promotional (such as those that make reference to a company or product) violateour username policyand are typically blocked to enforce that policy.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you will not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again. Consider usingone of the many websitesthat allow this instead.

If youdointend to make useful contributions about some other topic, you must convince aWikipedia administratorthat you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text{{unblock|Your reason here}}below this message box.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Tell us what new username you want to use. Please make sure that your new username does not violate ourusername policyand check that it has not already been taken(click here to search).
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If instead you believe that you have been blocked by mistake (i.e., you have not in fact been using Wikipedia for promotional purposes), please write{{unblock|Your reason here}}below this message box and replace the text "Your reason here" with the reason why. See alsoWikipedia:Appealing a blockfor more information.Cirt(talk)18:07, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Request reason:

I'm fairly certain that you will not unblock me, but I wanted to get someone's attention. I'd like to request an article for Firstmark Credit Union to be written by someone in the community. Since I have been cut off from any avenues to request this properly, I'd like to request assistance in doing so here. If there is another page to request this on, please let me know. Decline reason:

Not an unblock request.WP:RAis an appropriate place for requests like yours but you'll have to be unblocked first.Mangojuicetalk15:03, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, pleaseread theguide to appealing blocksfirst,then use the{{unblock}}template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired.Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

{{unblock|I would like to request to be unblocked and to change my user name to DonnaKP. I understand that I was blocked due to a name that did not comply with the Wikipedia policy. I was overwhelmed at the start of this process in trying to understand how the Wiki world worked and as important as it was, the rule slipped by me. My intent on writing the Firstmark Credit Union article was only to tell the history of the credit union in a neutral, factual way. It was NEVER intended to be a promotional piece for the credit union. I understand that it needs to be referenced-based, not strictly first or second person information. This was my first article and I made some mistakes. I hope that you all will allow me the chance to begin anew. If it's an option, I am willing to place my writing into a sandbox to be reviewed by other editors before making the page live – whatever it takes. Thank you.Firstmark Credit Union 17:39, 1 September 2009 (UTC)}}

The fact that you are signing your messages as "Firstmark Credit Union" suggests that you are a representative of, or are writing on the behalf of, this company. I suggest you readWikipedia's conflict of interest guidelinesbefore continuing.rʨanaɢtalk/contribs22:34, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am unsure as to why my sign off says Firstmark Credit Union. That was the name of my article -- not my user name. DonnaKP

Your request to be unblockedhas beengrantedfor the following reason(s):

Your request is reasonable. By the way, a good place to place your "sandbox" edits to be reviewed by other people is on the talk page of the corresponding article. SeeWP:COIfor more information on editing with a conflict of interest.

Unblocking administrator:Please check foractive autoblockson this user after accepting the unblock request.

Thank you so much Rspeer!!! Now to change my login name to DonnaKP: should I just open a new user account since I don't have any articles up or should I request it through WP:CHU? Thanks again! DonnaKP 15:22, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

FYI: I decided to go forward with creating a new user account. If anyone is keeping tabs, you can now find me at DonnaKP. DonnaKP 22:11, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

In response to your question, it's fine for you to create a new account and stop using this one. I can't see why anyone would say otherwise. It's not like you're trying to hide it.rspεεr(talk)06:25, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
