Valitut Palatis a monthly general-interest family magazine published inHelsinki,Finland.It is the Finnish edition ofReader's Digest.[1]

History and profile[edit]

Valitut Palatwas started bySanomain 1945,[2][3]and the first issue appeared in April that year.[4]Eljas Erkkowas instrumental in the establishment of the magazine, and his assistant Sirkka Ruotsalainen was the founding editor-in-chief.[4]Its publisher is Oy Valitut Palat[5]which was part ofReader's Digest Inc.[6][7]The Club Internacional del Libro group (CIL Group) acquired the Oy Valitut Palat on 30 April 2013.[8]The magazine has its headquarters in Helsinki and is published on a monthly basis.[9][10][11]

Valitut Palatsupports bothconservative valuesandmodern technology.[12]During theCold Warperiod it functioned as a window for Finland to the West and was among the leading anti-communist publications in the country.[4]The Finnish-Soviet Union Association claimed that bothValitut PalatandDet Bästa,Swedish edition ofReader's Digest,were two major anti-Soviet propaganda tools in Finland.[13]

The magazine covers content from its parent publication,Reader's Digest,but its material is adapted to the needs and cultural background ofFinnishreaders.[2]

Circulation[edit]

The first two issue ofValitut Palatsold 50,000 copies and 75,000 copies, respectively.[4]The magazine had a circulation of 100,000 copies in 1957.[4]

In 2007 the circulation ofValitut Palatwas 223,300 copies.[14][15]Its circulation was 197,000 copies in 2009, 187,404 copies in 2010[5]and 177,578 copies in 2011.[16]In 2012 the circulation of the magazine was 157,979 copies.[17]Its 2013 circulation dropped to 131,663 copies.[18]
