Varchas(Sanskrit:वर्चस्,romanized:Varcas) is aHindu deity.He is one of the eightVasus.He is the son ofChandra,the moon god, andRohini,a daughter ofDakshaand the chief consort of Chandra.[3]According to theMahabharata,Arjuna'sandSubhadra'sson,Abhimanyu,is regarded to be his incarnation.[4]

Legend[edit]

According to the Mahabharata, a conference once took place among thedevasand Chandra, where it was proposed that Varchas be incarnated on earth for the destruction of wicked men. Chandra did not wish to be separated from his beloved son, but consented to the proposition, on the condition that Varchas would not leave him for more than sixteen years. Accordingly, during theDvapara Yuga,Varchas was born asAbhimanyu,the son of thePandavaprince,Arjuna,and theYadavaprincess,Subhadra.Abhimanyu was slain when he was sixteen fighting in theKurukshetra War.[5][6]
