Vaynor(Welsh:Y Faenor,meaning "The Manor" ) is a village andcommunity(formerly aparish) inMerthyr Tydfil County BoroughinWales,United Kingdom. The population of the community at the2011 censuswas 3,551.[1]

It is about four miles north of the town ofMerthyr Tydfiland is within the borders of theBrecon BeaconsNational Park.

The community includes the threevillagesofCefn-coed-y-cymmer,Trefechan andPontsticillas well as Pontsarn and Vaynor. To the west areNant Glais Caves. It also includes the southern section ofPontsticill Reservoirand the eastern end ofLlwyn-On Reservoir.

History

Until 1974, the village was acivil parishin the Vaynor and Penderyn Rural District ofBrecknockshire.From 1974 to 1996, it was part ofMerthyr Tydfildistrict inMid Glamorgan.[2]It is notable for its connections with theIronmasterRobert Crawshay,owner of the world's firstironworks at Cyfarthfa,who is buried in Vaynorchurchyard.

Governance

Between 1973 and 1996 Vaynor was an electoral ward to Merthyr Tydfil District Council, initially electing three district councillors.[3]Subsequently, Vaynor became a ward toMerthyr Tydfil County Borough Council,electing two (generallyIndependent) county councillors.[4]
