Early life and education

Howells was brought up inCwmbach,Rhondda Cynon Taf,Wales.[1]She was educated atSt John the Baptist School,aChurch in Walessecondary schoolinAberdare.[2]She studied international and Welsh history at theUniversity of Wales, Cardiff,and graduated with aBachelor of Artsdegree.[2]She remained at Cardiff to undertakepostgraduate studyin Modern Welsh History, and graduated with aMaster of Artsdegree.[2]

Before her election to the Senedd, Howells was a history teacher and the assistant head ofsixth formatSt Cenydd Comprehensive SchoolinCaerphilly,South Wales.

Political career

In December 2015, it was announced that Howells had been selected as theWelsh Labourcandidate for theCynon Valleyconstituencyof theSenedd.[3]She has been a member of theLabour Partyfor over 20 years.[3]On5 May 2016,she was elected aMember of the Welsh Assemblyfor that constituency; she received 9,830 votes (51.1% of the votes cast).[1]She has sat as aLabour and Co-operativemember since re-election in2021.[4]

Howells chairs the Welsh Labour Group of MSs.[5]Howells is president of the mental health charity Friends R Us and vice-president of Cwmbach Male Voice Choir.[5]Vikki is also a member of the Cynon Valley History Society, the social justice thinktank the Bevan Foundation, theCo-operative Party,theGMBandUSDAW.[5]
