Walter Devereux, 5th Viscount Hereford

Sir Walter Devereux,5th Viscount Hereford,2nd Baronet of Castle Bromwich(c. 1575 – 1656), was anEnglishpoliticianwho sat in theHouse of Commonsat various times, between 1614 and 1624, before succeeding to the familyViscountcyin thepeerage of England.

Life[edit]

The son ofSir Edward Devereux,ofCastle Bromwich,Warwickshire,and his wifeCatherine née Arden,he was grandson ofSir Walter Devereux,cr.Viscount Herefordin 1550. He succeeded his father in 1622 as2nd baronet,later inheriting in 1646 thetitleof hisfirst cousin twice removedasViscount Hereford.[1]

Devereux previously served asMember of Parliament(MP) forStaffordin 1614, before being elected in 1621 as MP forMarlborough,and in 1624 as MP forWorcestershirethen in 1625 MP forWorcester.[2]He also served asHigh Sheriff of Worcestershirein 1625.

WhenRobert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essexdied in 1646, Sir Walter succeeded as5th Viscount Hereford,but not to hisearldomto which he was notin remainderand which became extinct. Lord Hereford was appointed asLord Lieutenant of Monmouthshirein 1646 and became a member of theRadnorshireMilitia Committee in 1648.[3]

Devereux married twice, firstly, Elizabeth Baspole, daughter of Robert Baspole and secondly, Elizabeth Knightley, daughter of Thomas Knightley. With the latter he had three sons:
