Life

[edit]

Wihthun seems to have been appointed bishop in 789, as he appears last among the bishops in the witness list of a charter issued byOsfrith,King ofMercia,toWærmund,Bishop of Rochesterin that year.

Wihthun's last datable subscriptions are to two charters of 805: a grant byCuthred,King ofKent,to Archbishop Wulfred,[1]and a grant byCoenwulf,King ofMercia,andCuthred,King ofKent,to a priest called Wulfhard.[2]He also witnessed a grant from between 805 and 807 byCuthred,King ofKent,to Æthelnoth,praefectus.[1]

Wihthun died sometime after 805 and before 811.[3]
