Winonais a city in southeastShannon County,Missouri,United States. The population was 950 at the2020 census.

History

A post office called Winona has been in operation since 1888.The community was named afterWinona, Minnesota,the native home of an area lumberman. The name is also a Sioux word meaning 'first born.'

Geography

Winona is located in theOzarksof southern Missouri. The city is at the intersection ofUS Route 60andMissouri Route 19.The city lies within theMark Twain National Forest.Birch Treeis eight miles to the west,Eminenceis about eight miles to the north on Route 19, andVan Burenis approximately 18 miles to the east in adjacentCarter County.

According to theUnited States Census Bureau,the city has a total area of 3.81 square miles (9.87 km²), all land.

As of thecensusof 2010, there were 1,335 people, 529 households, and 358 families living in the city. Thepopulation densitywas 350.4 inhabitants per square mile (135.3/km²). There were 595 housing units at an average density of 156.2 per square mile (60.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.93%White,0.07%BlackorAfrican American,0.82%Native American,0.07%Asian,0.15% fromother races,and 1.95% from two or more races.HispanicorLatinoof any race were 1.50% of the population.

There were 529 households, of which 38.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.7% weremarried couplesliving together, 14.0% had a female householder with no husband present, 7.0% had a male householder with no wife present, and 32.3% were non-families. 27.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.02.

The median age in the city was 34.1 years. 30% of residents were under the age of 18; 9.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.8% were from 25 to 44; 24.1% were from 45 to 64; and 13% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.6% male and 50.4% female.

As of thecensusof 2000, there were 1,290 people, 525 households, and 343 families living in the city. The population density was 342.4 inhabitants per square mile (132.2/km²). There were 587 housing units at an average density of 155.8 per square mile (60.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.96%White,1.94%Native American,and 3.10% from two or more races.HispanicorLatinoof any race were 0.39% of the population.

There were 525 households, out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% weremarried couplesliving together, 13.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.09.

In the city the population was spread out, with 30.4% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $18,640, and the median income for a family was $24,000. Males had a median income of $21,912 versus $15,865 for females.
