Alexander Victor Schauffele(/ˈzændərˈʃfəl/;born October 25, 1993) is an Americanprofessional golferwho plays on thePGA Tour.He won theTour Championshipin 2017 and thegold medalat themen's individual golf eventof the2020 Summer OlympicsinTokyo, Japan.Schauffele won the2024 PGA Championshipto claim his firstmajor championshiptitle.[2]

Early life[edit]

Schauffele was born on October 25, 1993, inSan Diego,California,to Chen Ping-Yi and Stefan Schauffele.[3]His mother was born in Taiwan, but grew up in Japan before moving to the United States.[4]His father Stefan was born inStuttgartto a French mother and a German father.[5]Schauffele's parents met at San Diego'sUnited States International Universityin 1988 and married three months later.[6]They then moved to Germany, where Xander's elder brother Nico was born, before returning to San Diego.[7]

Schauffele's father introduced him to golf at age 9, and they joined Bernardo Heights Country Club.[6]Stefan has been Xander's only swing coach throughout his golf career.[8]Stefan's teaching philosophy relies heavily on basic ball flight laws and golf club mechanics. As a result, Xander did not see his own swing until about the age 18.[9]

Two of Schauffele's great-grandfathers played soccer at the European premier level.Johann Hoffmannplayed for theAustria national football teamand won multiple Austrian (SK Rapid Wien), Bohemian (DSV Saaz), and French (FC Sochaux;Racing Strasbourg) national titles. After playing football forVfB Stuttgart,Richard Schauffeleexcelled intrack and field,garnering over 40 titles indiscus,javelinandshot putfor 2 clubs, theStuttgarter Kickersand the Cannstatter Ruder-Club.

Amateur career[edit]

Schauffele was the individual winner of the 2011 California State High School Championship (California Interscholastic Federation,CIF), playing forScripps Ranch High School.[10] After graduating from high school, Schauffele played his freshman year in college atCalifornia State University Long Beach,where he garnered the 2012Big West ConferenceFreshman of the Year as well as the 2012 First Team All-Big West awards.[11]

Prior to his sophomore year, Schauffele transferred toSan Diego State University,where eventually he would play out his college career and graduate in 2015. During his three years at SDSU, Schauffele was a Ping and Golfweek Third Team All-American. Scholastically, he was twice awarded the Mountain West Conference All-Academic Team Award. At SDSU, he holds the records for all-time lowest tournament score against par (−17); all-time career scoring average (71.50); as well as the seasonal records for par-5 performance (4.5135); birdies (171) and eagles (9).[12]

Schauffele defeatedBeau Hosslerto win the 2014California State Amateur ChampionshipatLa Costa Resort and Spa.Later that summer, the two long time rivals met again in a final at Chicago'sBeverly Country Clubfor the 2014Western Amateurwhere Schauffele lost to Hossler in the final match in dramatic fashion.[13]

Schauffele accumulated a collegiate record that featured 27 top-10s, 19 of which were top-fives, with four of these being runners-up and three wins (from a total of 50 tournaments). He was ranked in the top 10 of theWorld Amateur Golf Rankingat the time he turned professional in 2015.[11][12][14]

Professional career[edit]

After turning professional in June 2015, Schauffele entered the 2015Web.com Tour Qualifying Tournamentin fall. He was runner up in first stage at Southern Dunes GC inMaricopa, Arizona.He went on to win second stage at Oak Valley GC inBeaumont, California,and ultimately, narrowly, earned hisWeb.com Tourcard in the finals in Florida in a tie for 45th.[15][16]

2016 Web.com Tour[edit]

In 2016, Schauffele played a full season (23 events) on theWeb.com Tour.He finished 26th on the regular-season money list, missing aPGA Tourcard for 2017 by less than $1000.00, but went on to earn a card through theWeb.com Tour Finalsby finishing 15th on the Finals money list (excluding the 25 regular-season graduates).[17]

2016–17 PGA Tour: two wins, Rookie of the Year[edit]

Schauffele made his PGA Tour debut at theCareerBuilder ChallengeinLa Quinta, California.In June 2017, at the2017 U.S. Openheld atErin Hills,Schauffele recorded a bogey-free 6-under-par 66 – it was the first time a player has returned a bogey-free round of 66 or better in their first appearance inU.S. Open.[18]He subsequently became one of only 15 players to ever reach 10 under par at a U.S. Open.[19]He eventually finished in a tie for fifth place, earning him an exemption into the2018 championship.

Three weeks later, in July, Schauffele recorded his first PGA Tour victory, at theGreenbrier Classic.With the win, he earned exemptions into theOpen Championship,via the Open Qualifying Series, thePGA Championshipand the2018 Masters Tournament.

Schauffele qualified for the end of seasonTour Championshipby moving up to 26th in the standings, from 33rd at the start of theFedEx Cup Playoffs.[20]There he birdied the 72nd hole to claim his second tour victory, by one stroke overJustin Thomas,and become the first rookie to win the Tour Championship. It was also the first time a rookie had won any FedEx Cup playoff event.[21]The win moved Schauffele to third place in the final FedEx Cup standings, bettering the previous best mark by a rookie held byJordan Spiethby four positions, and gave him a three-year exemption on the PGA Tour, through the 2019–20 season.

During 2017, Schauffele rose to 32nd in theOfficial World Golf Ranking,up 267 spots from his 2016 year-end position of 299. He was voted "Rookie of the Year 2017" by his peers.[22]

2017–18 PGA Tour[edit]

At the beginning of 2018, Schauffele switched equipment manufacturers, signing an endorsement deal withCallaway,[23]having previously been sponsored byTaylorMade.[24]In May, he finished T2 at the2018 Players ChampionshipatTPC Sawgrasswith a score of 14 under par.[25]In theOpen ChampionshipatCarnoustie,he tied for second with a score of six-under-par.[26]

Schauffele began the2018 FedEx Cup Playoffsin 28th position in the standings. Entering the third of four events in the playoff series, the2018 BMW Championship,he was 41st, needing to move up at least eleven spots to advance to theTour Championship.He finished in a tie for third to rise to 18th position. That finish allowed him the opportunity to attempt to defend his 2017 Tour Championship title.[27]Schauffele ultimately finished T7 at the 2018Tour Championship,while placing 15th in the season-longFedEx Cup.[28]

2018 European Tour[edit]

Schauffele joined the2018 European Touras an associate member. With his win at the 2018WGC-HSBC Champions,Schauffele rose in theEuropean Tour's Order of Merit, the year long points race dubbed theEuropean Tour Race to Dubai,to 4th position.[29]Schauffele entered the European Tour final event, theDP World Tour Championship, Dubai,in 5th position. With a final round score of 6-under-par 66, which equaled the lowest score of the day, Schauffele finished T16. This ensured a season-ending 4th position on the Order of Merit and participation in the 2018 European Tour's bonus pool.[30]

2018–19 PGA Tour: 2 wins; Presidents Cup[edit]

In October 2018, Schauffele won theWGC-HSBC Championsevent inShanghai, Chinaat theSheshan Golf Club,in a playoff, defeatingTony Finauon the first extra hole.[31]In January 2019, he won theSentry Tournament of Championsat The Plantation Course atKapalua ResortinMaui,Hawaii,[32]returning a course record equalling 11-under-par 62 in the final round to passGary Woodland,who he had trailed by five shots entering the final round.[33]

In April, Schauffele tied for second in theMasters Tournament,one stroke behind championTiger Woods.It was his third top-five in eight starts at major championships. He led the field with 25 birdies, becoming the third player since 1980 to have 25 or more birdies in a single Masters, joiningPhil Mickelson(25 in 2001) andJordan Spieth(28 in 2015).[34]In June, he finished tied for 3rd at theU.S. OpenatPebble Beach Golf Linksin Pebble Beach, California.[35]AtThe Open Championshipin July 2019, he became the first player to have theirdriverfailThe R&A's conformity test.[36]

In early August 2019, Schauffele placed 4th in the inaugural 2019Wyndham RewardsTop 10.[37]Through the playoffs, he fell to 8th in the standings entering theTour Championship;this gave him a 6 shot deficit to the leader,Justin Thomas,under the new handicapping system. He had erased the deficit after the first round with a score of 6-under-par 64 and was tied for the lead going into the second round.[38]He ultimately finished in second place, but took maximum world ranking points having returned the lowest aggregate score.[39]

In December 2019, Schauffele played on the U.S. team at the2019 Presidents CupatRoyal Melbourne Golf Clubin Australia. The U.S. team won 16–14. Schauffele went 3–2–0 and won his Sunday singles match against International team star and veteranAdam Scott.Golf Digestcalled Schauffele the "unsung hero" of the U.S. team.[40]

2021: Olympic Gold[edit]

At theMastersin April, Schauffele was two shots behind the leader on the 16th tee, and in second place during the final round. However, at the hole he scored a triple bogey, and ultimately finished third. In August, Schauffele recorded a final-round of 67 to win theOlympic gold medal;he made an up-and-down for par on the final hole to beat SlovakianRory Sabbatiniby one shot.[41]With the accomplishment, Schauffele became the first American since 1900 to win an Olympic gold medal in golf.[42]In September, Schauffele played on the U.S. team in the2021 Ryder CupatWhistling StraitsinKohler, Wisconsin.The U.S. team won 19–9 and Schauffele went 3–1–0, winning in both fourball and foursomes, and losing his Sunday singles match againstRory McIlroy.

2022: Three PGA Tour wins[edit]

In April, Schauffele won theZurich Classic of New Orleans,a team event, with playing partnerPatrick Cantlay.In June, he won theTravelers Championshipfor his sixth PGA Tour victory.[43]In July, he won the J. P. McManus Pro-Am, an unofficial event on theEuropean Tourheld atAdare Manor,after shooting a course record 64 in the first round.[44]The same week, he won the co-sanctionedGenesis Scottish Openplayed at theRenaissance ClubinEast Lothian,Scotland. It was his third PGA Tour victory in the 2021–22 season, and his seventh overall.[45]

Schauffele qualified for the U.S. team at the2022 Presidents Cup;he won three and lost one of the four matches he played.[46]

2023: Ryder Cup[edit]

In September 2023, Schauffele played on the U.S. team in the2023 Ryder CupatMarco Simone Golf and Country ClubinGuidonia,Rome,Italy.The European team won 16.5–11.5 and Schauffele went 1–3–0 including a win in his Sunday singles match againstNicolai Højgaard.[47]

2024: First major title[edit]

In May 2024, Schauffele won his first major with a birdie on the final hole in thePGA ChampionshipatValhalla Golf Club.[48]Schauffele won the tournament with a score of 21 under par, which is a record low for a major championship.[49]He beatBryson DeChambeauby one stroke after DeChambeau also birdied the final hole.[50]

Personal life[edit]

Schauffele met his wife, Maya, in college at San Diego State University. They were married in 2021.[51]She caddied for Schauffele at the 2024Masters Tournament Par 3 Contest.[52]

Schauffele is an avid cigar smoker.[53]His father, Stefan, introduced Schauffele to cigars at the age of 10, and his favorite cigar is theMontecristoNo. 2.[54]He has been featured byCigar Aficionado.[55]
