Zhao Xia[2](simplified Chinese:Triệu hà;traditional Chinese:Triệu hà;pinyin:Zhào Xià;born July 28, 1988) is a Chineseprofessional wrestler,currently making appearances on theindependent circuitasXia Lee.She is best known for her tenure inWWE,where she performed under thering nameXia Li.

Professional wrestling career[edit]

WWE (2017–2024)[edit]

Mae Young Classic (2017–2018)[edit]

In January 2017, Li joined theWWE Performance Centerafter she had impressed talent scouts at a tryout inShanghai, China.[3]On July 13, she made her debut for WWE competing in the inauguralMae Young Classic,making her the first Chinese woman to ever compete in a WWE ring.[4]She was eliminated in the first round byMercedes Martinez.[5]On September 19, 2018, Li competed in her secondMae Young Classic,defeatingKaren Qin the first round,[6]but was eliminated in the second round byDeonna Purrazzo.[7]Throughout 2017 and 2018, Li only wrestled at NXT live events outside of the Mae Young Classic.[8]

Beginnings in NXT (2019−2020)[edit]

On January 27, 2019, at theRoyal Rumble,Li made her first appearance on a main roster pay-per-view by entering the women'sRoyal Rumble matchat number 11, lasting 4:48 before being eliminated byCharlotte Flair.[9][10]She made her television debut on the February 20 episode ofNXT,losing in a singles match toMia Yim.[8][11]On the May 1 episode ofNXT,she picked up her first televised win by defeatingRachel Evers.[8]In mid-November, Li got into a feud withAliyahandVanessa Borne,getting singles victories over the duo on the November 13 and 27 episodes ofNXTrespectively, the latter of which saw her get attacked byNXT Women's ChampionShayna Baszler,Marina ShafirandJessamyn Dukeafterwards.[12][13]It led to a non-title match the following week, with Li losing to Baszler by submission.[14]

Li would compete in the women's Royal Rumble match again at thenamesakeevent on January 26, 2020, entering at number 24 and lasting 10:49, before being eliminated by Shayna Baszler.[15][16]Li fought with Mia Yim again on the February 26 episode ofNXT,this time winning the match with a roll-up after a distraction fromDakota KaiandRaquel González.[17]On the March 25 episode ofNXT,Li was set to face Aliyah in a qualifier to compete in aLadder matchto determine the number one contender for the NXT Women's Championship, but was injured by her backstage before the match started.[18]This led to a brief match between the two on the April 15 episode ofNXT,with Li getting revenge by defeating Aliyah.[19]On the May 6 episode ofNXT,Li had a match withChelsea Green,which she lost due to a distraction from Aliyah.[20]This led to another match between the two on the June 17 episode ofNXT,with Aliyah getting the victory afterRobert Stonedistracted Li by vomiting in the ring.[21]

Tian Sha (2020−2021)[edit]

On the September 16 episode ofNXT,Li teamed up with Jessi Kamea in a losing effort againstKayden CarterandKacy Catanzaro,with Li refusing to shake hands with them after the match.[22]The following week, she competed in abattle royalto determine the number one contender for the NXT Women's Championship, which was won byCandice LeRae.[23]Li went against Carter on the September 30 episode ofNXT,losing the match and pushing her to the mat after being extended a hand.[24]The following week, after losing a match againstShotzi Blackheart,she was approached byBoawho gave her a letter and followed him afterwards.[25]On the October 21 episode ofNXT,Li lost a match against Catanzaro. After the match, she attacked her and Carter, thus turningheel.[26]

On the November 25 episode ofNXT,a vignette aired of Li and fellowNXTsuperstar Boa, both haggard in appearance, entering the backseat of a vehicle together before being driven to an unknown location. The same elderly man who handed Boa a letter on the November 11 episode ofNXTappeared outside of the building, appearing to be waiting for them.[27]Weekly vignettes began airing of both Li and Boa being brutally "punished for their failures", all while being watched over by the elderly man and a mysterious woman in black-and-white face paint.[28]A transformed Li returned on January 6, 2021 during NXT'sNew Year's Evilspecial, squashing Katrina Cortez in dominant fashion.[29][30]The following week, she defeated another jobber in two strikes, but then was wordlessly given an order by her master on the stage, resulting in Li tying up the opponent and taking more shots at her.[31]On the February 10 episode ofNXT,Li defeatedCora Jadein quick fashion. During and after the match, Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter came out to the ring to reason with her but she attacked them both for disrespecting her masterMei Ying.[32]Li went on to defeat both Catanzaro and Carter in singles bouts on the February 24 and March 10 episodes ofNXTrespectively, and beat them again in a handicap match three weeks later.[33][34][35]

In June, Li began a feud with Mercedes Martinez over losing to her in the inaugural Mae Young Classic, defeating her in a match atNXT TakeOver: In Your House.[36][37]On the June 29 episode ofNXT,she teamed with Boa to defeat Martinez andJake Atlasin a mixed tag team match.[38]On the July 20 episode ofNXT,Li challenged Raquel González for the NXT Women's Championship but failed to win. During the match, she suffered an injury following a springboard senton splash however, she appeared to be okay afterwards.[39][40]

SmackDown (2021–2023)[edit]

As part of the2021 Draft,Li was drafted to theSmackDown brand.[41][42]She made her main roster debut on the December 10 episode ofSmackDownas aface,protectingNaomias she fought offSonya Deville,Natalya,andShayna Baszler.[43]On the February 25, 2022, episode ofSmackDown,Li made her in-ring debut by defeating Natalya.[44]After weeks of inactivity, Li turned heel in a segment on the April 22 episode ofSmackDown,stating that no one was worthy of protecting and that she was only focused on protecting herself.[45]On the June 3 episode ofSmackDown,Li competed in asix-pack challengeto determine the number one contender to theSmackDown Women's Championship,which was won by Natalya.[46]The following week, she failed to qualify for the Women'sMoney in the Bank ladder matchafter losing toLacey Evans.[47]Li made her debut on theRaw brandon the June 27 episode, competing in a Last Chance six-way elimination match to qualify for the Women's Money in the Bank ladder match, but was eliminated first byBecky Lynch.[48]

On the August 5 episode ofSmackDown,Li competed in agauntlet matchto determine the number one contender toLiv Morgan's SmackDown Women's Championship, which was won by Baszler.[49]The following week, she teamed withShotzito participate in theWWE Women's Tag Team Championship Tournamentfor the vacanttag titles,but were eliminated byRaquel RodriguezandAliyah.[50]On the August 26 episode ofSmackDown,Li teamed with Shotzi again to compete in a "Last Chance" Fatal 4-Way to be in the semifinal match of the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship Tournament later that night, which was won by Natalya and Sonya Deville.[51]On the September 9 episode ofSmackDown,she competed in a five-way elimination match to determine the number one contender to Morgan's SmackDown Women's Championship atExtreme Rules,which was won byRonda Rousey.[52]On the November 11 episode ofSmackDown,Li competed in a six-pack challenge to determine the number one contender to Rousey's SmackDown Women's Championship atSurvivor Series: WarGames,which was won by Shotzi.[53]On the December 23 episode ofSmackDown,Li competed in a gauntlet match to determine the number one contender to Rousey's SmackDown Women's Championship, eliminatingEmmaandTegan Noxbut was eliminated by eventual winner Rodriguez.[54]

AtRoyal Rumbleon January 28, 2023, Li entered at number 14, lasting 15 minutes and 30 seconds before she was eliminated byZelina Vega.[55][56]On the March 24 episode ofSmackDown,Li teamed with Lacey Evans and fought Natalya and Shotzi to determine who will qualify for the Women's fatal four-way tag team match atWrestleMania 39,but failed to win.[57]

Feud with Becky Lynch and hunt for the NXT Women's Championship (2023–2024)[edit]

As part of the2023 WWE Draft,Li was drafted to theRawbrand.[58][59]On the June 8 episode ofMain Event,Li lost toCandice LeRae.[60]On the October 9 episode ofRaw,Li would confront NXT Women's ChampionBecky Lynch,asking for a title shot.[61]On the October 30 episode ofRaw,Li defeated LeRae in a brief match and would once again confront the now former champion Lynch, who would tell her they could fight right now, but Li responded they will fight on her time.[62]The following week, while Lynch was making her entrance for a battle royal to determine the number one contender forRhea Ripley'sWomen's World ChampionshipatSurvivor Series: WarGames,Li would attack her, resulting in Lynch not being able to compete. Raw General ManagerAdam Pearcewould take Li out of the match as punishment.[63]On the November 7 episode ofNXT,Li made her return to the brand to confront new NXT Women's ChampionLyra Valkyria,telling her if she had seen what Li had done to former champion Lynch the night prior, and went onto claim that she was coming for Valkyria's title. A security guard would attempt to get in between Li and Valkyria, to which the former would take him out with a roundhouse kick.[64]

On the November 13 episode ofRaw,after defeatingIndi Hartwellvia knockout, Li was interrupted by Becky Lynch who was not waiting to fight on Li's time, but rather her time, before getting into the ring and attempted to "Man Handle Slam"Li. She escaped Lynch's attempt and rushed out of the ring.[65]That same night, NXT's officialTwitteraccount posted a video of Lyra Valkyria receiving a virtual invitation to a "Warriors Tea Ceremony" hosted by Li.[66]On the following episode ofNXT,the tea ceremony would take place, with Li explaining that the ceremony was important because it is how her ancestors honored their rival before combat. Li would go on to compare the tea leaves crumbling in the heat to what would happen to Valkyria next week in their title match. Li would then command Valkyria to consume the tea, to which she respectfully declined. After declining, Li warned Valkyria that if she didn't consume the tea, Li would show no remorse in battle. Before leaving, they both bowed in respect for one another.[67]On the November 20 episode ofRaw,Li got her match against Lynch, but failed to win.[68]On the following night's episode ofNXT,Li competed against Valkyria for the NXT Women's Championship in a losing effort.[69]

AtRoyal Rumble,on January 27, 2024, Li entered at number 16, lasting 6:46 before she was eliminated byNia Jax.[70][71]On the February 19 episode ofRaw,Li competed in a Last Chance battle royal to earn the final spot in the women'sElimination Chamber matchatElimination Chamber: Perth,being eliminated by eventual winner Raquel Rodriguez.[72]

On April 19, 2024, Li announced via Twitter that she had left WWE, with news confirming she had been released shortly after, ending her 7-year tenure with the company. Her final television appearance was on the April 17th episode ofWWE Main Eventin a losing effort toNatalya.[73]

Independent circuit (2024–present)[edit]

On June 10, it was announced that Xia, now performing as Xia Lee, would be competing at West Coast Pro Wrestling's Queen of Indies event on August 17.[74]

Personal life[edit]

Before joining WWE, Li was a lifelong combat-sports athlete, competing in the martial art ofwushu.[4]She was the co-founder of her own fitness studio and achieved multiple first place finishes in variousmartial artsand fitness competitions including: the secondWorld Traditional Chinese Wushu Championship,[78]Nike Challenge Competition and first China Throw Down: Battle on the Bund.[79]
