Yakov Sannikov

Yakov Sannikov(dates of birth and death unknown) was a Russianpromyshlennikand explorer of theNew Siberian Islands.[1][2]

In 1800, Sannikov discovered and chartedStolbovoy Island,and in 1805Faddeyevsky Island.In 1809–1810, he took part in the expedition led byMatvei Gedenschtrom.In 1810, Sannikov crossed the island ofNew Siberiaand a year later explored Faddeyevsky Island. He also discoveredBunge Land,and suggested that there was a vast land north of theKotelny Island.This hypothetical island has become known asSannikov Land.[2]

AstraitbetweenMaly Lyakhovskyand the Kotelny islands bears Sannikov's name.[2]
