Yao Chen(Chinese:Diêu thần;pinyin:Yáo chén;Pe̍h-ōe-jī:Iâu Sîn,born 5 October 1979) is a Chinese actress and philanthropist.[1][2]She first gained popularity for her role inMy Own Swordsman(2006). Yao went on to star in the television seriesLurk(2008),Divorce Lawyers(2014), andAll Is Well(2019). Her notable film credits includeCaught in the Web(2012),Firestorm(2013),Lost, Found(2018), andSend Me to the Clouds(2019).

In 2019, she received theSingapore International Film Festival’s cinema icon award for a career that has encompassed a wildly popular television series (Lurk)and award winning film (All is Well).[1][3]In the same year, Yao was recognized as the best actress atTokyo Film FestivalandBusan International Film Festival,in addition, she was also nominated for best actress at theGolden Rooster Awards.[4]In 2014,Timenamed Yao as one of the most influential people on theirTime 100list.[5]As of 2014, she is listed as the 83rd most powerful woman in the world byForbes.[6]Several English-language media outlets have nicknamed her "China's answer toAngelina Jolie."[7][8]Yao ranked 56th onForbesChina Celebrity 100list in 2013,[9]69th in 2014,[10]41st in 2015,[11]and 60th in 2019.[12]In 2013, she was named aUNRefugee Agency Goodwill Ambassador to help highlight refugee issues for the Chinese-speaking world.[2]She is the first Chinese Ambassador in this program. Yao Chen won the 22nd Crystal Awards at the opening session of the 46thWorld Economic ForumAnnual Meeting in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland. Personal life

Yao was born inFuzhou,Fujianprovince on 5 October 1979 to a middle-class family, and studiedChinese folk danceat theBeijing Dance Academyfrom 1993 to 1997, then studied at theBeijing Film Academyfrom 1999 to 2003.[15]

In 2004, Yao married to Chinese actor Ling Xiaosu, and divorced in January 2011.[16]Yao married cinematographerCao Yuin November 2012.[17]She gave birth to their first child in 2013, three years later, she gave birth to their 2nd baby.[18][19]

Career

Yao starred as the daughter of a powerful martial artist in a 2005 television production ofMy Own Swordsman.The series was especially popular and skyrocketed her to fame in China.[20]Following this, in 2008, she played the part of an iconic guerilla leader in the seriesLurk.[21]The spy drama became a smash hit in China and Yao won the Best Actress award at theHuading Awardsand theGolden Eagle Awards.[20][22]

In 2009, she made her theatrical debut; playing a white-collar heroine inA Story of Lala's Promotion.[23]She also had a supporting role in the romantic comedySophie's RevengestarringZhang Ziyi.In a departure from her usual style, Yao's portrayal of a money-grabbing woman received acclaim from the audience.[24]Yao then starred in romantic comedyColor Me Love(2010) as an aspiring fashion magazine editor, which would go on to become one of her most famous film roles.[25][26]

In 2012, Yao starred inChen Kaige's social dramaCaught in the Webas a truth-seeking journalist.[27]She then starred alongsideAndy Lauin the action thrillerFirestorm,which won her the Outstanding Actress award at theChinese Film Media Awards.[28]

Yao played a lawyer in the 2014 dramaDivorce Lawyers.The drama was a huge success in China and sparked discussions online about emotion, truth and law.[29]

More recently, Yao starred in blockbustersMonster Hunt(2015),[30]Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe(2015)[31]andJourney to the West 2(2017).[32]Yao was nominated as Best Supporting Actress at theHundred Flowers Awardsfor her performance inMonster Hunt.[33]She also starred inMBA Partners(2016), playing an ambitious young woman.[34]

In 2017, Yao served as the jury of the23rd Shanghai Television Festival.[35]

In 2018, Yao starred in the mystery filmLost, FoundalongsideMa Yili;a remake of the South Korean filmMissing.[36]

In 2019, Yao starred in the family dramaAll Is Well.[37]The series was extremely popular during its run, and Yao experienced a resurgence in popularity.[38]

Most recently, she starred inIf You are the One 3in 2023.[39]Other key cast includeGe You,Shu Qi,Fan WeiandGuan Xiaotong.[40]

Activism

Yao was named theUNHCR's Honorary Patron for China and has visited refugees in places including the Philippines, Thailand, Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia. The number of followers of her microblogging during this visit increased dramatically, won over by her sincere, fearless communication and her honest engagement with current world events.[41][42]In 2013, she was named the first UNHCR goodwill ambassador in China.[43][44][45]

Yao is among the people most followed onWeibowith 79 million followers.[46][47]She uses her influence and wide reach to spread awareness on issues such as refugees crisis, pollution and censorship.[48][5]

Yao was among the recipients of the 2016 Crystal Award for her work on behalf of the U.N. refugee agency in raising awareness of the world refugee crisis.[49][50]The same year, she was selected as one of the "Young Global Leaders" in 2016 by the World Economic Forum.[51]Yao was also awarded the Top Influence Award at the You Bring Charm to the World award ceremony.[52]

Since 2021, Italian jewellerPomellatohas announced Yao as its Chinese Brand Ambassador.[55]
