Ben Nutley(born 7 April 1992) is an Englishrugby unionplayer forRFU ChampionshipsideCoventry RFC.He began his career at hometown clubLuton RFCbefore joining Saints' Academy in 2010. He plays as aFlanker[1]or aLock.[2]
Club career
[edit]Nutley was born inLutonand began his rugby career atLuton RFC[3]after giving up a promising football career as a goalkeeper withLuton Town FC'syouth team.[4]
Before the start of the 2010–11 season, he secured a one-year contract withNorthampton Saintsacademy.[3]He was a regular with the Wanderers (Northampton Saints "A" Team), including captaining them.[2]He made his 1st Team debut[4]on 7 November 2010, away toSaracensin theLV= Cup,[5]the first of three appearances that season.[2]
He made hisAviva Premiershipdebut againstGloucesterin the club’s opening fixture of the 2011–12 season[6]and became a regular in the team[7]including fourHeineken Cupappearances.[8]
Competing for a place in a team that featured a number of internationals (not leastPhil DowsonandTom Wood), Nutley managed to win ten 1st Team appearances in 2012–13 while captaining the Wanderers to a second successiveAviva A Leaguesemi-final.[2]
Most recently stepping out with the Saints' second team side the Northampton Wanderers, Nutley helped the side lift the Aviva 'A' League trophy as they beat Gloucester United in the final at Franklin's Gardens.[9]
Ben's twin brother, Tom, plays withNational League 1clubBlaydon.[7]
International career
[edit]Nutley was selected to play forEngland Under 19sin 2010–11. He scored a try on his debut in a 13–31 victory over Ireland inDublinon 31 December 2010.[10]
He went on to theEngland Under 20sin 2011–12.[11]He played in the Under 20s Six Nations, making his first appearance in the 7–42 win over Italy inRovigoon 3 March 2012.[12]He took part in theJunior World Championship,appearing against South Africa,[13]Ireland (twice)[14][15]and Australia.[16]
