Daniel Anthony Farris(born October 17, 1985), known professionally asD Smoke,is an American rapper and former educator fromInglewood, California.[1]He first became known as the winner of theNetflixhip hop-based reality competition seriesRhythm + Flowin 2019.[2]The following year, he independently released his debut studio albumBlack Habits(2020), which earned him nominations forBest Rap AlbumandBest New Artistat the63rd Annual Grammy Awards.In 2023, he signed withSnoop Dogg'sDeath Row Records.[3]

Career

Farris grew up in a musical family with his mother, brothers, and cousin beinggospelsingers inInglewood, California.His mother was a backup singer forTina Turner.In 2006, he formed the songwriting group WoodWorks with his brothers and his cousinTiffany Gouché,who wrote songs forGinuwineandThe Pussycat Dolls,and is credited for co-writing "Never"byJaheim.[4][5]He was also in a musical trio with his brother called N3D.[6]On May 9, 2006, he released his first album calledProducer of the Year.[7]In 2015, he appeared on SiR's independent albumSeven Sundayson the song "You Ain't Ready".[8]

In 2019, Farris was a contestant on the Netflix competition showRhythm + Flow,and was named the inaugural winner of the three-week series.[9]On October 24, he released his debut extended play,Inglewood High,a 7-track project including a feature from Gouché.HipHopDXgave the EP a positive review, saying he could "utilize multiple flows, deliver introspective storytelling, could rap in Spanish incredibly well and had an ear for quality."[10]He performed at the2019 Soul Train Music Awardswith SiR.[11]He also appeared onthe Game's 2019 albumBorn 2 Rapon its song "Cross on Jesus Back".[12]

D Smoke later appeared as himself in thePeacockseriesBel-Air,in the episode "PA to LA", based onThe Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.He also starred in Paramount series Mayor of Kingstown.

Farris graduated fromUCLAand was a Spanish and music theory teacher atInglewood High School.[13]
