Don Ray Clarke(born December 11, 1945) has been ageneral authorityofthe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints(LDS Church) since 2006.
In the 1960s, Clarke served as anLDS Church missionaryinArgentina.He has abachelor's degreefromBrigham Young Universityand anMBAfromWashington State University.
Although he began his career withFord Motor Company,Clarke spent most of his career as an executive in retail companies. By the mid-1980s he was serving as chairman of May Department Store's Venture operation.[1]He was chairman and CEO ofCaldor Corporationfrom 1986 to 1998, both before and after it split fromMay Department Storesin 1989.[2]Clarke then returned to work for May as president ofLord & Taylor.[2][3]Clarke also served as a volunteer professor of business atSouthern Virginia Universityand was involved withAscend Humanitarian Alliancein beginningmicrocreditoperations inBolivia.[4]Clark also served as an advisor on finances toRodney K. Smith,president ofSouthern Virginia University.
LDS Church service
[edit]Clarke has served in the LDS Church as abishop,high councilor(in theBuena Vista, Virginiastake),stakeYoung Menpresident andstake president.He waspresidentof theBoliviaSanta CruzMissionfrom 2001 to 2004.[5]
Clarke became an LDS Churchgeneral authorityand member of theSecond Quorum of the Seventyin 2006. In 2011, he was transferred to theFirst Quorum of the Seventy.[6]Clarke served first as a counselor and then, from 2007 to 2011, as president of the church's Central AmericaArea.While in this position, he presided at the ground-breaking ceremony for theSan Salvador El Salvador Temple[7]and conducted the ground-breaking ceremony for theQuetzaltenango Guatemala Temple.[8]In 2015, he became anemeritusgeneral authority. As of 2021, Clarke is president of the church's Utah correctional facilitiesdistrict.[citation needed]
Clarke and his wife, Mary Ann Jackson, were married in 1970 and they are the parents of six children.
