Dato SriHajiFadillah bin Haji Yusof(Jawi:فضيلة بن يوسف; born 17 April 1962) is a Malaysian politician and lawyer who has served as theDeputy Prime Minister of Malaysiasince 2022,Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformationsince 2023 and theMember of Parliament(MP) forPetra Jayasince March 2004. He is the first DPM fromSarawak,one of theBorneostates inMalaysiaand the second DPM not from theUnited Malays National Organisation(UMNO) afterWan Azizah Wan Ismailfrom thePeople's Justice Party(PKR).

Previously, he served as theMinister of Plantation and Commoditiesfrom December 2022 to December 2023,Senior Ministerin charge of Works andMinister of Worksfor the third term in theBarisan Nasional(BN) administration under former Prime MinisterIsmail Sabri Yaakobfrom August 2021 to the collapse of the BN administration in November 2022 and theMember of Parliament(MP) forPetra Jayasince March 2004. He served as the Senior Minister in charge of Infrastructure Development andMinister of Worksfor the second term in thePNadministration under former Prime MinisterMuhyiddin Yassinfrom March 2020 to August 2021 and for the first term inBarisan Nasional(BN) administration under former Prime MinisterNajib Razakfrom May 2013 to May 2018,[1][2]Chair of theScience, Innovation and Environment Select Committee,one of only twoselect committeesled by an opposition MP from December 2019 to his reappointment as a Minister in March 2020.[3][4]

Fadillah is a member ofParti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu(PBB), a component party of theGabungan Parti Sarawak(GPS) coalition.[5]He is also the Parliamentary Whip of GPS and has served as Senior Vice President of PBB since 2017. He was the Youth Chief of PBB from 2007 to 2017.

Early life and education

Fadillah was born on 17 April 1962 at Kampung Hilir inSibuto Yusof Merais (1927–2018) and Dayang Rosnah Abang Madeli (1932–2023). He is the ninth child of 14 siblings. Fadillah's father, Yusof Merais, was a community activist during the era of theanti-cession of Sarawakto the British colonials in 1946. He was imprisoned twice, including when he was implicated in theassassinationof British GovernorDuncan StewartinSibuin 1949. He was a friend ofRosli Dhobi,who assassinated Stewart. Yusof had participated in the Malay Youth Movement, which opposed the handover of Sarawak to the British, and he was also involved in the Black Crow group that opposed the colonial presence and demanded Sarawakian independence. After the movement was banned following the assassination of Stewart, he continued the struggle with the Sarawakian Youth Front, led byAhmad Zaidi Adruce.The second time he was imprisoned was during the confrontation over theformation of Malaysiain 1962. Yusof died at the age of 91 in 2018.

Fadillah attended St. Mary's Primary School inSibuand Panglima Bukit Gantang Secondary School inParit Buntarfor his secondary education. In 1986, he pursued aBachelor of Laws(LLB) degree in Civil and Sharia atUniversity of Malaya.

Early career

Fadillah became alawyerafter obtaining a LLB. In 1989, he joined politics as a member ofParti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu(PBB), which at that time was a component party ofBarisan Nasional(BN) coalition.

Political career

Fadillah first ran for parliament in the11th Malaysian general election,having previously been an official inParti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu(PBB) and alawyer.[6]He won the election for the seat of Petra Jaya.[7]

After being re-elected in the12th Malaysian general election,Fadillah was appointed Deputy Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation by Prime MinisterAbdullah Ahmad Badawi.[8]

After the13th Malaysian general election,Fadillah was promoted to full minister as Minister of Works under the newCabinetline-up of Prime MinisterNajib Razak.[9]

Following the defeat ofBarisan Nasional(BN) in the14th Malaysian general election,Fadillah was madechief whipof the oppositionSarawak Parties Alliance(GPS) in theHouse of Representatives of Malaysia.

Deputy Prime Minister

In the2022 general election,Fadillah managed to retain his seat, this time with a significantly larger majority. Following the elections, no single party secured a majority to form the federal government. Consequently,Yang di-Pertuan AgongAl-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shahproposed the formation of aunity government,withAnwar Ibrahimeventually appointed as itsleaderon 24 November 2022.

In a cabinet announcement on 2 December 2022, Fadillah was appointed Deputy Prime Minister alongsideAhmad Zahid Hamidi.Simultaneously, he was assigned the role ofMinister of Plantation and Commodities.Fadillah's appointment is of historic significance as he is the first individual fromSarawakto hold the country's second-highest political office since theformation of Malaysia.Sarawak is one of theEast Malaysianstates.

Personal life

Fadillah is married to Ruziah Mohd Tahir. The couple has five children.
