Ghulam

Ghulam(Arabic:غلام,ALA-LC:ghulām) is an Arabic word meaningservant,assistant,boy,oryouth.[1]It is used to describe young servants inJannah.It is also used to refer to slave-soldiers in theAbbasid,Ottoman,Safavidand to a lesser extent,Mughal empires,though more commonly with the wordGhilman,which is the plural form ofghulam.[2]

It is traditionally used as the first element of compounded Muslim male given names, meaningservant of...,mostly inPersian(where it is pronouncedGholâm) and inUrdu.In both Persian and Urdu, the particleal-is not used withghulam(unlike compounds formed withʿabd;e.g.Gholammohammad,Gholamhoseyn,Gholamali... andAbd al-Muhammad,Abd al-Husayn,Abd al-Ali...). Since the 20th century,Ghulamhas also been used as an independent given name and surname.
