HaroldSeeger(May 16, 1917 – March 13, 2005) was an Americananimated cartoonproducer and director who owned his own studio, the Hal Seeger Studio (Hal Seeger Productions). He is most famous as the creator of the 1960s animated seriesBatfink,Milton the MonsterandFearless Fly.During the 1930s and 1940s he was also active as a comics writer and artist, most famously for theBetty Boopcomic strip andLeave It to Binky.[1]
Biography
[edit]Born inBrooklyn,New York, Seeger began working as an animator forFleischer Studiosin the early 1940s.[1]His credits included "A Kick in Time" for theColor Classicsseries and a sequence for the feature filmMr. Bug Goes to Town.
During the later part of the 1940s, he worked as a screenwriter for a series of movies featuring well knownBlack performers,including the 1947Cab CallowaymusicalHi-De-Hoand two films featuringDusty FletcherandMoms Mabley,Killer DillerandBoarding House Blues".[1] In 1950 he wrote and directed aWarner Bros.short subjectHands Tell the Storyfeaturing a story told with only human hands.[2][1]
In 1962, his studio produced and syndicated 100 newOut of the Inkwellcartoons, based on theKoko the Clowncharacter, originally created byFleischer Studios.[1] Seeger then took control of animating the opening & ending sequences forThe Porky Pig Showin 1964.[3][1]
He is best known for having produced the animated programsMilton the Monster(1965–66) andBatfink(1966–67). He also producedFearless Fly(1965), the adventures of abumpkinfly who is physically helpless and practically blind without his trademark oversize rectangular glasses, but on putting them on he is invincible. This cartoon was a feature ofThe Milton the Monster Show.[4]
