Khasa Prakrit(also known asKhas Prakrit,Sanskrit Khasa,Himalayan Prakrit,Northern Prakrit,Khas Kura) is aPrakritlanguage of medieval South Asia and acommon ancestor languageof thePahari languages,which includesNepali,Kumaoni,Jaunsari,Mandeali,KangriandGarhwalilanguages.[1][2]It was commonly referred to as खश (Khaśa), खष (Khaṣa), and खशीर (khaśīra) in theSanskrit texts.
Indian linguistSuniti Kumar Chatterjisuggests that Nepali language developed from Khasa Prakrit.[3]Khas Prakrit is named after the speakers of language,Khas people,who live in theHimalayas.[4]
History

[edit]Khasa belongs to theIndo-European family of languages.Like otherIndo-Aryan languages,Khasa is a direct descendant of an early form ofVedic Sanskrit,throughShauraseni PrakritandŚauraseni Apabhraṃśa(from Sanskritapabhraṃśa"corrupt" ).[5]
