Lorenzo Musetti(born 3 March 2002) is an Italian professionaltennisplayer.[1]He has a career-high singlesATP rankingof World No. 15 achieved on 26 June 2023 and a doubles ranking of No. 142 achieved on 1 April 2024. He is currently the No. 2 Italian.[2]Musetti has won twoATP Toursingles titles. In 2024, he achieved his best careermajorperformance by reaching the semifinals atWimbledon,and won a bronze medal at the2024 Paris Olympics.

He has also won two titles on theATP Challengerand twoITF World Tennis Tourtitles.

Early life

Musetti was born on 3 March 2002 inCarrara,Tuscany.[3]His father, Francesco Musetti, works in a marble quarry, and his mother, Sabrina Ratti, is a secretary.[4][5]His older sister, Valentina, was a tennis player who is currently married toGianluca Mager.[6]

He began playing tennis at the age of four, and has been coached by Simone Tartarini since childhood.[7]His tennis idol growing up wasRoger Federer.[8][9]

Junior career

He has achieved a career-highITFjuniors ranking of No. 1 in the world on 10 June 2019.[10][11]He reached the final of the2018 US Openboys' singles. On 26 January 2019 Musetti defeatedEmilio Navato win the2019 Australian Open boys' singlestitle.[12]

Professional career

2020: ATP debut

After receiving awildcardand passing the qualifying, he made hisATP Tourmain draw debut in February 2020 at theDubai Tennis Championships,at the age of 17, where he lost in the first round againstAndrey Rublev.

His second main draw tour-level match and first on a Masters 1000 level in his career came after qualifying at theItalian Open,where he defeated three-timeGrand SlamchampionStan Wawrinkain straight sets in the first round, becoming the first player born in 2002 to win an ATP match, and former World No. 4Kei Nishikoriin the second round.[13]In October he received a wildcard for theForte Village Sardegna Open,where he reached his first ATP semifinal, retiring due to an injury against eventual championLaslo Đereafter trailing 1–4 in the third set.

2021: Top 100, ATP 500 semifinal, Grand Slam debut and fourth round

Musetti was the youngest player to break into the top 100 for the first time in his career by reaching the semifinals of theATP Tour 500Mexican Opentournament in March after going through qualifying. There he had his first top 10 win against world no. 9Diego Schwartzmanin three sets. He also beatFrances Tiafoeand 5th-seedGrigor Dimitrovto break into the top 100 and reach his second ATP semifinal, and first at a 500 level, where he was defeated in straight sets byStefanos Tsitsipas.[14][15]The 19-year-old was the third-youngest semifinalist in the tournament's history. OnlyXavier Malisse(1998) andRafael Nadal(2005) reached the final four in Acapulco at a younger age.[16]

Musetti reached his third ATP semifinal at theLyon Openin May, where he was again defeated by Tsitsipas.

He capped off the clay season by reaching the fourth round at theFrench Open,on his Grand Slam championship debut (only the sixth player since 2000 to do so), beating 13th seedDavid Goffin,Yoshihito NishiokaandMarco Cecchinatoin his first five-set match.[17]He had a 2–0 lead in sets against top seedNovak Djokovicin the fourth round, but retired in the 5th set trailing 0–4.[18]As a result of this successful run, he climbed to his best ranking of World No. 57 on 13 September 2021.

At the end of the season, he took part in theNext Generation ATP Finals,where he was eliminated in theround robinstage as third of his group, having lost toSebastián Báez[19]and finalistSebastian Korda,and won toHugo Gaston.

2022: First two ATP titles, top 25, Masters quarterfinal

At the beginning of the season, Musetti reached the quarterfinals at the ATP 500Rotterdam Open,losing toJiří Lehečkaafter having defeated No. 11Hubert Hurkaczin the second round. InMonte Carlo,he recorded the second top 10 win of his career by defeating world number 9Félix Auger-Aliassimein the second round.[20]

After reaching his fourth career tour-level semifinal at the2022 Hamburg European Openwith a win overAlejandro Davidovich Fokina,he made his top 50 debut in the rankings.[21]He defeatedFrancisco Cerúndoloin the semifinals to reach the first ATP final of his career. He triumphed over World No. 6 and top seedCarlos Alcarazin the final, winning his first ATP title and firstATP 500tournament. As a result, he climbed up the rankings to world No. 31 on 25 July 2022.[22]Following the title, Musetti made his top 30 debut at world No. 30 on 1 August, after winning his opening round at theCroatia Open.[23]

At theUS Open,where Musetti was seeded for the first time at a grand slam, he reached the third round, his deepest run in a grand slam since the 2021 French Open. In the first round, he defeated former world number 7David Goffinin a five set match, decided by a fifth-set tiebreak.[24]He then defeatedGijs Brouwer,but lost toIlya Ivashkain four sets.[25]

In the fall, Musetti reached his fifth and sixth ATP semifinals at the consecutiveSofia OpenandFirenze Opentournaments, where he was defeated in both cases by eventual championsMarc-Andrea Huesler[26]andFélix Auger-Aliassime.[27]He then won his second career title at theTennis Napoli Cupover fellow countrymanMatteo Berrettini,without dropping a set.[28]Following the title, he reached a career-high ranking of No. 23 on 24 October 2022.

At the2022 Paris Masters,Musetti reached the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 for the first time in his career. He defeated former world No. 3Marin Čilić,Nikoloz Basilashvili,and world No. 4Casper Ruudfor his biggest and first top-5 win, but lost toNovak Djokovic.[29][30] Musetti's final ATP tournament of the year was theNext Generation ATP Finals,where he was eliminated in the round-robin stage after beatingTseng Chun-hsin,but losing toDominic StrickerandJack Draper.[31]

2023: Top 15 debut, win over world No. 1, Davis Cup champion

At theUnited Cup,Musetti helped Italy reach the final after going 4–1 in his singles matches; he retired after the first set in his match againstFrances Tiafoedue to a shoulder injury.[32]After this, he reached the top 20 at world No. 19 on 9 January 2023.[33]Musetti was upset in the first round of theAustralian OpenbyLloyd Harrisin five sets,[34][35]however, he jumped one spot to a career-high of No. 18 in the rankings following the tournament.

From the beginning of theGolden SwinginBuenos Aires,to theGrand Prix Hassan IIinMarrakech,Musetti was in poor form, going 2–6 in his singles matches.

At the2023 Monte-Carlo Mastershe defeatedMiomir Kecmanović,compatriotLuca Nardiby a doublebagelin just 50 minutes,[36][37]and world No. 1 and top seedNovak Djokovicto reach his second Masters quarterfinal.[38][39]He then lost to compatriotJannik Sinnerin straight sets.[40]At theFrench Open,Musetti played strongly defeatingMikael Ymer,Alexander Shevchenko,andCameron Norrieall in straight sets, but lost to world No. 1Carlos Alcarazin the round of 16.[41][42]

Prior to Wimbledon, Musetti made two grass court quarterfinals atStuttgartandQueen's Club;he lost toFrances TiafoeandHolger Runerespectively.[43][44]As a result, he reached the top 15 on 26 June 2023. At the2023 Wimbledon ChampionshipsMusetti reached the third round, his furthest run at Wimbledon yet, defeating bothJuan Pablo VarillasandJaume Munarin straight sets. He was eventually eliminated byHubert Hurkacz.[45]

He lost in the first round at theUS Opento qualifier and Major debutantTitouan Droguet.He then lost at the second round ofShanghai,having received a bye for the first, to qualifier and Masters debutantHsu Yu-hsiou.He also recorded two consecutive first round losses toGrigor Dimitrovat the European indoors tournaments, the2023 Erste Bank Openand the2023 Rolex Paris Mastersand left the top 25 in the rankings.

Musetti partook in the2023 Davis Cup,whereItalywould be the champions for the first time since1976.[46]He played two singles matches throughout the tournament, including in the semifinal against Serbia, losing both. He played two doubles matches, both partnering withSimone Bolelli,where he would win one in the round robin stage of theFinalsagainst Chile in September.

He did not participate in the2023 Next Generation ATP Finalsdespite qualifying for a third year in a row.

2024: 100th career win, Wimbledon semifinal, Olympic bronze

At the2024 Australian Openhe recorded his first win at this Major defeatingBenjamin Bonzi. InMiamihe reached the fourth round defeating 16th seedBen Sheltonbefore losing to top seed and Indian Wells championCarlos Alcaraz.

At the2024 Monte-Carlo Mastershe defeated 13th seedTaylor Fritzrecording his 100th career win.[47]

He defeated again Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals of the2024 Wimbledon Championshipsto reach his first ever Major semifinal.[48]He lost to No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic.[49]

He reached his fourth ATP final at the2024 Croatia Open Umagdefeating qualifierMarco Trungelliti,Dušan LajovićandJakub Menšík[50]but lost toFrancisco Cerúndoloin three sets.[51]

Musetti became the first Italian tennis player to win an Olympic medal for 100 years when he won bronze at theParis OlympicsdefeatingFélix Auger-Aliassimein the third place play-off in three sets[52]after losing to top seedNovak Djokovicin the semifinals.[53]

At theChengdu Openin September, he reached the final but lost out in straight sets toShang Juncheng.[54]

Personal life

In March 2024, Musetti announced via Instagram that he and his partner Veronica Confalonieri had welcomed a son, whom they named Ludovico.[55]
