Michael William Day(born March 20, 1980) is an American actor and comedian. He was hired as a writer for theNBCsketch comedyseriesSaturday Night Livebefore its39th seasonin 2013. He was then promoted to on-air cast status and became a featured player during the show's42nd seasonin 2016, later being promoted to repertory status beginning with the44th seasonin 2018.[1]Day is also the host of the Netflix showIs It Cake?He previously was an on-air correspondent forThe Tonight Show with Jay LenoandThe Jay Leno Show.[2]

Early life and education

Michael William Day was born March 20, 1980, inOrange, California.[3]He attendedPanorama Elementary School[4]and later graduated fromEl Modena High School.There, he was involved in the drama program and thestudent government.He wrote comedic sketches for monthly assemblies and made the theme for hishomecoming"Batman".Day graduated from theUniversity of California, Los Angeleswith a degree in theater in 2002.[5]

Career

Day began his career withthe Groundlings,aLos Angeles–basedimprovisational theatergroup.[6]With the Groundlings, Day and Michael Naughton wrote and co-starred inDavid Blaine Street Magic,a parody of magicianDavid Blaine,portrayed byMitch Silpa.The video, posted toYouTube,was once one of themost-viewed videos on the site.[7]

Day was an original cast member on theimprovisational comedyseriesWild 'n OutonMTV.[4][6]He played various characters in the Groundling stage showGroundlings, In The Study, With The Candlestickin early 2009 and directedGroundlings Space Camp.[4]Day wrote forShowtime'sThe Undergroundin 2006.[8]

Day starred inNBC'sKath & Kim remake(2009),[6]wrote for and co-produced theCartoon NetworkshowIncredible Crew(2013),[9]and wrote forAdult Swim'sRobot Chickenin 2014.[8]Day hosted a recurring segment parodyingTMZfrom 2010 to 2013 onThe Jay Leno ShowandThe Tonight Show with Jay Leno.[5]Day was a featured cast member ofNBCvariety showMaya & Marty,alongsideMaya Rudolph,Martin Short,andKenan Thompson.He also served as one of the show's co-head writers.[10]

2013–present:Saturday Night Live

Day was hired as a writer forSaturday Night Livein 2013 for its39th season.[9]He was recommended for the job byNasim Pedrad,who had worked with him before and was a cast member of SNL at the time, appearing in her fifth and final season on the show.[11]OnSNLhe wrote many sketches featuring cast member & formerWild 'n Outco-starTaran Killam,with whom he wrote the screenplay toBrother Nature(2016).[12]

He was promoted to featured player forseason 42and was promoted to a repertory player in the beginning ofseason 44.[13]For hisaudition,he impersonatedDonald Trump Jr.andSNLactorKyle Mooney.[14]His debut appearance was in season 42's first episode, October 1, 2016, hosted byMargot Robbie.[8][15]Bobby Moynihan,Streeter Seidell,and Day wrote the sketch "Haunted Elevator" for the October 22, 2016 episode ofSNL.StarringTom HanksasDavid S. Pumpkins,Day played one of two dancing skeletons in the sketch.[16]The sketch went viral, and he reprised the role forThe David S. Pumpkins Halloween Special(2017).[17][18]

On the April 13, 2024 episode of Saturday Night Live, Day and guest host Ryan Gosling, appeared in a sketch as live-action versions of Beavis and Butt-Head.[19]The sketch went viral and received large media coverage and critical acclaim. The pair reprised the roles on the red carpet at The Fall Guy movie premiere, of which Gosling played the starring role.[20]

Day and his writing partnerStreeter Seidellhave completed one project and have two projects in development forDisney.The first of these,Home Sweet Home Alone,the sixth film in theHome Alonefranchise,was released onDisney+on November 12, 2021.[46]A live-actionInspector Gadgetfilm is in pre-production.[47]Walt Disney Picturesis also planning to produce a remake ofSpaceCamp.[48]

Day is currently in a relationship with actress Paula Christensen. Their son was born in August 2012.[50]
