Kuwait,officially theState of Kuwait,is a country inWest Asia.It is situated in the northern edge ofEastern Arabiaat the tip of thePersian Gulf,borderingIraqtothe northandSaudi Arabiatothe south.With a coastline of approximately 500 km (311 mi), Kuwait also shares amaritime borderwithIran.Most of the country's population reside in theurban agglomerationofKuwait City,the capital and largest city. As of 2023,Kuwait has a population of 4.82 million, of which 1.53 million areKuwaiti citizenswhile the remaining 3.29 million areforeign nationalsfrom over 100 countries. In 2024 the population of Kuwait has risen to 4.93 million which is a population increase of 1.98% from 2023.

Historically, most of present-day Kuwait was part of ancientMesopotamia.Before thediscovery of oil reservesin 1938, the country was a regional trade port; from 1946 to 1982, the country underwent large-scale modernization, largely based on income fromoil production.In the 1980s, Kuwait experienced a period of geopolitical instability and an economic crisis following thestock market crash.In 1990, Kuwait wasinvadedand subsequentlyannexedbyIraqunder the leadership ofSaddam Husseinfollowing disputes over oil production. TheIraqi occupation of Kuwaitended on 26 February 1991, following anAmerican-British-French-Saudi-Egyptianledinternational coalitionculminating in the expulsion of Iraqi forces.

Like most otherArab states in the Persian Gulf,Kuwait is anemirate;theemiris the head of state and the rulingAl Sabahfamily dominates the country's political system. Kuwait's official state religion is Islam, specifically theMaliki schoolof Sunni Islam. Kuwait is ahigh-income economy,backed by the world'ssixth largest oil reserves.Kuwaiti popular culture, in the form of theatre, radio, music, and television soap opera, is exported to neighboringGulf Cooperation Council(GCC) states. Kuwait is a founding member of the GCC and is also a member of theUnited Nations,theArab League,OPEC,and theOrganisation of Islamic Cooperation.(Full article...)

Located in theMiddle East,Kuwaitis a relatively small country that has been the center of many political and economic issues over the past few decades. Stemming from these tensions, Kuwait as well as other countries in the region, includingIran,Iraq,andQatarface threats from environmental issues. A loss of agriculture due to climate change, pollution from the country's oil industry andOil Fires of 1991as well as damages to agriculture and biodiversity are just some of the common environmental issues. The Kuwaiti government has worked to mitigate and adapt to these issues through policy and the creation of agencies to research, educated and inform about environmental problems, their sources, and their effects.
