Secretagogue
Inendocrinology,secretagogueis a substance that causes another substance to besecreted.The word contains the suffix-agogue,which refers to something thatleadsto something else; a secretagogue thus leads to secretion.
One example isgastrin,[1]which stimulates theH/K ATPasein theparietal cells(increasedgastric acidproduction by thestomach).Pentagastrin,a synthetic gastrin,histamine,andacetylcholineare also gastric secretagogues.
Insulin secretagogues,such assulfonylureas,triggerinsulinrelease by direct action on theKATPchannelof the pancreaticbeta cells.Blockage of this channel leads todepolarizationand secretion of vesicles.
Angiotensin IIis a secretagogue foraldosteronefrom theadrenal gland.
