Yeun Sang-Yeop[1](Korean:연상엽;born December 21, 1983), known professionally asSteven Yeun(/jʌn/YUHN), is an American actor. Yeun initially rose to prominence for playingGlenn Rheein the television seriesThe Walking Dead(2010–2016). He earned critical acclaim for starring in the thrillerBurning(2018) and the dramaMinari(2020). The latter earned him a nomination for theAcademy Award for Best Actor,making him the firstAsian Americanactor to be nominated.[2]Timemagazine named him one of the100 most influential people in the worldin 2021.[3]In 2023, he starred in the dark comedy seriesBeef(2023), for which he won twoPrimetime Emmy Awardsand aGolden Globe Award.

Yeun has also appeared in the filmsOkja(2017),Sorry to Bother You(2018),The Humans(2021) andNope(2022). He has also voiced main characters in animated television series such asVoltron: Legendary Defender(2016–2018),Tales of Arcadia(2016–2021),Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters(2017–2018),Final Space(2018–2021),Tuca & Bertie(2019–2022), andInvincible(2021–present).

Early life and education

Yeun was born inSeoulon December 21, 1983, to Je and June Yeun.[4]His father was an architect in South Korea before moving his family in 1988 to Canada, where they lived inRegina, Saskatchewan.[5]In Regina, he attendedRuth M. Buck Elementary School.[6]He has a younger brother named Brian.[7]The family later moved to the U.S. and settled inTaylor, Michigan,and thenTroy, Michigan,where Yeun lived until he graduated fromTroy High Schoolin 2001.[8][9]Growing up, Yeun's family spokeKoreanat home.[10]

Yeun was raised in a Christian household.[11][12][13][14]His parents, who owned beauty-supply stores inDetroit,[4]began calling him "Steven" after meeting a doctor by that name.[15]He received abachelor's degreein psychology with a concentration in neuroscience[4]fromKalamazoo Collegein 2005.[12]At Kalamazoo, he befriended the sister of comedianJordan Klepperand she took him to see Klepper's improv show, which inspired him to take his first acting class and later follow Klepper toChicago,where they joinedThe Second City.[4]

Career

2005–2009: Early career

Yeun revealed to his parents that he planned to pursue an improv career inChicagoinstead of enrolling in law school or medical school.[12][16]His parents were unhappy with the decision, but supported him nonetheless and gave him two years to pursue acting.[12]He moved to Chicago in 2005, living in the city'sLincoln Squarewith his brother.[11]Shortly after graduation, he joined Stir Friday Night, a Chicago-based Asian American sketch comedy troupe.[12]Other alumni of the group includeDanny Pudi,known for his role inCommunity.He joinedThe Second Cityin Chicago before moving toLos Angelesin October 2009.[12]

2010–2016: Breakout withThe Walking Dead

Yeun's breakout role was the starring role ofGlenn RheeonThe Walking Dead,anAMCtelevision horror drama based on thecomic book series of the same name.The series, which began in 2010, involves a group of characters who fight to survive in a violentapocalypticworld infested with flesh-eatingzombies.The Walking Deadbecame the highest-rated series in cable television history, and seasonsthreethroughsixof the show garnered the most 18 to 49-year-old viewers of any cable or broadcast television series.[17][18][19]The series has received mostly positive reviews from professional television critics.[20][21]PerVariety,Yeun was "a major part" of the show's success; his character developed "from a plucky young member of the show's central group to a bona fide action hero and sex symbol". Yeun left the show in 2016 after theseason 7 premiere.[22]

2017–2020: Transition to films

Yeun was cast inJoe Lynch'sactionhorrorfilmMayhem(2017).[23]The film was released in theaters on November 10, 2017.[24]In April 2016, Yeun was cast inBong Joon-ho'saction-adventurefilmOkja.[25]The film competed for thePalme d'Orin the main competition section at the2017 Cannes Film Festival.[26][27]It was released onNetflixon June 28, 2017.[28]Yeun also provided the voice of Bo in 2017'sThe Star.Yeun co-starred inBoots Riley'sdark comedySorry to Bother You,alongsideLakeith Stanfield,Armie HammerandTessa Thompson,[29]which was released in theaters on July 6, 2018.[30]The film had its premiere at theSundance Film Festivalin January 2018.[31]It additionally won The 2019National Board of Review'sTop Ten Independent Filmsaward,[32]as well asBest ScreenplayandBest First Featureat the 2019Independent Spirit Awards.[33]

In late 2018, Yeun played Ben in the South Korean mystery drama filmBurning,directed byLee Chang-dong.The film was first unveiled at the2018 Cannes Film Festival.[34]His performance in the film was acclaimed. Yeun won Best Supporting Actor at the2018 Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards,Toronto Film Critics Association Awards 2018,Florida Film Critics Circle Awards 2018,and2018 National Society of Film Critics Awards.In late 2018, Yeun landed a main role in an episode ofJordan Peele's revival ofThe Twilight Zone.[35]He currently voices the title protagonist Mark Grayson in the animated superhero seriesInvincible,adaptingRobert Kirkman'scomic book series,which is released on Amazon Prime in March 2021.[36]

In 2020, Yeun starred in and served as an executive producer forLee Isaac Chung'sA24immigrant dramaMinari,which also includesYoun Yuh-jung,Han Ye-ri,Alan Kim, Noel Kate Cho,Will PattonandScott Hazeamong the cast.[37]The film is about a Korean immigrant family becoming farmers in Arkansas; Yeun included his own immigrant experience in his acting.[38]The film had its world premiere and won two top awards at theSundance Film Festivalin January 2020.[39]Yeun received anAcademy Award for Best Actornomination forMinari.He also became the first Asian-American actor to be nominated at theScreen Actors GuildforOutstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role.[40]

Yeun does voice acting in both animated television series and films. Some of these roles include Avatar Wan inthe second seasonofThe Legend of Korra(2013), Steve Palchuk inTrollhunters(2016–2018) and3Below(2018-2019), Keith inVoltron: Legendary Defender(2016–2018), Nathan Park/Wingspan inStretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters(2017–2018), Little Cato inFinal Space,(2018–2021) and Speckle inTuca & Bertie(2019–2022). It was later revealed that Yeun's role as Steve Palchuk would continue intoWizards,the third series of theTales of Arcadiatrilogy.[41][42]The first season of3Belowwas released on Netflix on December 21, 2018, and the second and final season was released on July 12, 2019.

2021–present:Beefand acclaim

In 2021, he was included in theTime100,Time's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.[43]In 2021, he co-starred alongsideJayne Houdyshell,Richard JenkinsandAmy Schumer,inStephen Karam's award-winningone-act playadaptationThe Humans.[44]In 2022, he co-starred alongsideDaniel KaluuyaandKeke PalmerinJordan Peele's science fiction horror filmNope,as Ricky "Jupe" Park, the owner of the fictional theme park Jupiter's Claim.[45]

In 2023, Yeun starred oppositeAli Wongin the Netflix dark comedy seriesBeef,for which he also served as executive producer.[46]For his performance, he won aPrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actorand aGolden Globe Award for Best Actor.[47][48][49]He is the second person of Asian descent to win the Golden Globe Award in the category of best actor.[50]

In February 2023, it was announced that Yeun would star inThunderbolts*asRobert Reynolds / Sentry.[51]In early 2024, it was reported that Yeun dropped out of the project due to scheduling conflicts caused by the2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.[52]

Personal life

Yeun married photographer Joana Pak on December 3, 2016.[53]They reside inLos Angelesand have two children together.[54][55]

He is a longtime fan of theDetroit PistonsandDetroit Red Wings,[56][57][58]and endorsedAndrew Yangfor president in the2020 U.S. election.[59]
