It is situated in theHegauregion, about 5 km northwest ofLake Constance,13 km north ofRadolfzelland 25 km northwest ofKonstanz.

History

Arms of the Counts of Nellenburg (extinct 1422)

The Counts of Nellenburg founded Stockach in the 13th century, the town receivingtown privilegesin 1283. In 1401 to the Landgraviate of Nellenburg owned the towns ofEngen,Tengen,Radolfzell,Stockach, 125 villages, 9 abbeys and 4 mailing stations.

The Counts of Nellenburg became extinct in 1422 and their estates were acquired by theHouse of Habsburgin 1465; hence Stockach was a part ofFurther Austriauntil 1805. In theSwabian Warof 1499 the troops of theThree Leaguesbesieged the town but failed to capture it.

During theWar of the Spanish Succession,ElectorMaximilian II Emanuel of Bavariaset fire to Stockach. During theFrench Revolutionary Warsof theSecond Coalitiontwo battles were fought here between theFrench First Republicand theHabsburg monarchyin1799and1800.In 1810 Stockach finally fell to theGrand Duchy of Baden.
