TheUniversity of Leobenis apublicuniversity inLeoben,Styria,Austria. It was established on 4 November 1840[1]as theSteiermärkisch-Ständische MontanlehranstaltinVordernberg, Styria,Austria's mining region. In 1849 Peter Tunner relocated the university to nearbyLeoben.That year the university had a mere 48 students enrolled.
The University of Leoben is a member ofTU Austria,an association of three Austrian universities of technology and offers education and conducts research in the fields of mining, metallurgy and materials science.
Name
[edit]The university itself uses its German nameMontanuniversität Leobenin its English communications, the AustrianMinistry of Education, Science and Researchcalls the university theLeoben University Mining and Metallurgy [sic]in English and the English translation of the 2002 Universities Act calls the university theUniversity of Mining Leoben.[2][3]
