TheÖtztal Alps[1](Italian:Alpi Venoste,German:Ötztaler Alpen) are amountain rangein theCentral Eastern Alps,in theState of Tyrolin westernAustriaand theProvince of South Tyrolin northernItaly.

Geography

The Ötztal Alps are arrayed at the head of theÖtztalvalley, a side valley of theInnriver southwest ofInnsbruck,Austria. One line of summits forms part of the border between Austria and Italy.

The Ötztal Alps are bordered by theReschen Pass(1504 m) in the west and the Inn river in the northwest and north. In the east the range is separated from theStubai Alpsby theÖtztaler Achein the Ötztal, theTimmelsjoch(2474 m) and thePasserriver in thePasseier Valley.On the south and southwest, the range is limited by the deep valley of theEtschriver, here known as theVinschgau.

The Ötztal Alps are surrounded by the following ranges:

In September 1991,Ötzithe so-called "Iceman" was found on theHauslabjochbetween the peaksFineilspitzeandSimilaun.

The highest point of the Ötztal Alps isWildspitze3,774 metres (12,382 ft), which is also the second highest mountain in Austria (afterGroßglockner). Wildspitze is on one of several arms that extend north and northeast from the main ridge.
