Ștefan Augustin Doinaș(Romanian pronunciation:[ʃteˈfanawɡusˈtindojˈnaʃ];pen name ofȘtefan Popa) (April 26, 1922[1]– May 25, 2002) was aRomanianNeoclassicalpoet of theCommunistera. He wrote 23 books of poetry, as well as children's books, essay collections, and a novel.[2]

Doinaș was born inCherechiu,Bihor County.After graduating from theMoise Nicoară High SchoolinArad,he studied medicine inSibiu,where theUniversity of Clujhad moved in the wake of theHungarianoccupation ofNorthern Transylvania.[3][2]There he joined theSibiu Literary Circle,a group formed aroundLucian Blaga.Doinaș then studied philosophy and literature at the University of Cluj, graduating with aB.A.degree in 1947.[2]Starting in 1948, he taught at schools inHălmagiuandGurahonț,inArad County.[4]

After moving to Bucharest in 1955, he was arrested in 1957 by theSecuritatefor "failure to report" and turn over a fellow editor, who had invited his colleagues to participate in an anti-communist protest. He was released from prison one year later, and was subsequently rehabilitated by theCommunist authorities.[4][2]Doinaș published his first volume of poems,Cartea mareelor( "The Book of Tides" ), in 1964. Some of his most famous works include:Omul cu compasul,Seminția lui Laokoon,Anotimpul discret,Interiorul unui poem,andLamentații.In 1992, he became amember of the Romanian Academy,and in 2002, honorary president of theWriters' Union of Romania.Elected in 1992 to theSenate of Romaniaas a member of theCivic Alliance Party[ro],he served until 1996.[3]

Doinaș died ofthroat cancerat Fundeni HospitalBucharest.That night, his wifeIrinel Liciu[ro],a former firstballerinawhom he had married in 1958, committedsuicide;she was 74.[2]The two were buried in the city'sBellu Cemetery.[5]
