The1782 South Carolina gubernatorial electionwas held on 31 January 1782 in order to elect theGovernor of South Carolina.Candidate and formerSpeaker of the South Carolina House of RepresentativesJohn Mathewswas elected by theSouth Carolina General Assemblyafter their initial choiceChristopher Gadsdendeclined to take the office. The exact number of votes cast in this election is unknown.[1]

On election day, 31 January 1782, candidateJohn Mathewswas elected by theSouth Carolina General Assembly.Mathews was sworn in as the 33rdGovernor of South Carolinathat same day.[2]
