- 19 January –Richard Crosbiesuccessfully flies in ahot air balloonfromRanelaghGardens toClontarf.He goes on to makes several unsuccessful attempts to cross theIrish Seain ahydrogen-filled balloon.
- 10 May – a hot air balloon collides with a chimney inTullamore,setting light to around 100 houses in the town centre.[1]
- TheDuke of Rutland,Lord Lieutenant of Ireland,with the support ofWilliam Pitt,successfully steers a liberal trade measure through theParliament of Ireland,initially against the opposition ofHenry GrattanandHenry Flood.However theFoxiteopposition in theHouse of Commons of Great Britainso emasculates the measure with amendments that it is rejected in its new form in Ireland.

- Belfast Academyestablished as agrammar schoolby Rev. Dr.James Crombie;by the 21st century it will be the oldest school inBelfast.[2]
