- Early – publication of the first complete parallel-text edition ofAnnals of the Four Mastersbegins in Dublin asAnnála Ríoghachta Éireann: Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland by the Four Masters, from the earliest period to the year 1616. Edited from MSS in the Library of the Royal Irish Academy and of Trinity College Dublin with a translation and copious notesbyJohn O'Donovan.
- February –John MitchelpublishesTheUnited Irishman,a weeklyIrish nationalistnewspaper.It is suppressed and Mitchel arrested and convicted under theTreason Felony Act 1848on 26 May and sentenced totransportationtoAustralia.[2][3]
- 7 March –Thomas Francis Meagherflies theIrish TricolourinWaterford,the first recorded usage of the flag which is now the national flag of the Republic of Ireland.

- June – medical studentsKevin Izod O'DohertyandRichard D'Alton Williams,and chemistThomas Antisell,publish theIrish Tribune,a weekly Irish nationalist newspaper. It is suppressed after five issues and the editors arrested on 10 July. O'Doherty is convicted under the Treason Felony Act after a third trial on 30 October and sentenced to transportation to Australia; Williams is acquitted two days later.[5]
