The1907 Liverpool Kirkdale by-electionwas aby-electionheld inEnglandon 27 September 1907 for the BritishHouse of CommonsconstituencyofLiverpool Kirkdale,a division of thecity of Liverpool.

Vacancy[edit]

The seat had become vacant when the sittingConservativeMember of Parliament(MP),David MacIverhad died on 1 September 1907, aged 67.[1]He had held the seat since being elected unopposed at aby-election in 1898,[2][3] having previously been MP forBirkenheadfrom 1874 to 1885.[4]

TheLiberal Unionistcandidate was 63-year-oldCharles McArthur,who had been the MP forLiverpool Exchangefrom1897until his defeat at the1906 general election.

John Hill

TheLabour Partycandidate was 42-year-oldJohn Hill,aScottishtrade unionistwho unsuccessfully contestedGlasgow Govanat the1906 general election.

Result[edit]

On a slightly increased turnout, the result was a victory for McArthur, who slightly increased his majority of that won by McIver in 1906.

Aftermath[edit]

McArthur held the seat at theJanuary 1910 general election,but died in office later that year, triggeringanother by-election.

Hill did not stand for Parliament again, but became general secretary of theUnited Society of Boilermakers and Iron and Steel Shipbuildersin 1909, and served asPresident of the Trades Union Congressin 1917.
