The1917 Inverness-shire by-electionwas a parliamentaryby-electionheld for theHouse of Commonsconstituency ofInverness-shirein theScottish Highlandson 2 January 1917.

Vacancy[edit]

The by-election was caused by the elevation to thepeerageof the sittingLiberalMP,John Dewar.[1]Dewar had held the seat since1900and had been unopposed at the previous election inDecember 1910.

Candidates[edit]

Thomas Morison

The Inverness-shire Liberals adoptedThomas Brash MorisonKCas their new candidate. Morison was abarristerwho had been serving asSolicitor General for Scotlandsince 1913.[2]

There was at this time no tradition of candidates fromorganised labourcontesting Parliamentary elections in this constituency. No nominations were received from theConservativeswho were partners in thewartime Coalitionand were presumably content to honour thewartime electoral truce.Morison was therefore returned unopposed.[3]
