Democratic primary[edit]

The Democraticprimary electionwas held on 9 August 1938. AsCarl E. Baileyreceived a majority of the votes (51.47%), arun-offwas unnecessary.

General election[edit]

On election day, 8 November 1938,DemocraticnomineeCarl E. Baileywon re-election by a margin of 106,619 votes against his foremost opponentRepublicannominee Charles F. Cole, thereby retaining Democratic control over the office of Governor. Bailey was sworn in for his second term on 14 January 1939.[3]
