The prizes were announced on May 2, 1938, at the annual alumni dinner of theColumbia University School of Journalism.[1]They were presented by university presidentNicholas Murray Butlerand deanCarl W. Ackerman.[1]The announcement was broadcast nationally on theNBC Red Network.[1]

- TheEdmonton Journalwas given a special bronze plaque for "its leadership in the defence of the freedom of press in the province of Alberta", for its campaign against theAccurate News and Information Act.Engraved certificates were given to 95 other Alberta newspapers for their participation in fighting the law.[6][7]
