The1940 Iowa State Cyclones football teamrepresented Iowa State College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts (later renamedIowa State University) in theBig Six Conferenceduring the1940 college football season.In their fourth and final season under head coachJames J. Yeager,the Cyclones compiled a 4–5 record (2–3 against conference opponents), finished in fourth place in the conference, and were outscored by opponents by a combined total of 132 to 118.[1][2]
Tom Smith was the team captain.[2]No Iowa State player was selected as a first-team all-conference player.[3]
Iowa State was ranked at No. 103 (out of 697 college football teams) in the final rankings under theLitkenhous Difference by Scoresystem for 1940.[4]
