Tipperarywere thedefending championsbut were defeated byLimerickin the Munster quarter-final.
On 4 September 1966,Corkwon the championship following a 3-9 to 1-10 defeat ofKilkennyin the All-Ireland final. This was their 20th All-Ireland title, their first in twelve championship seasons.
Cork'sSeánie Barrywas the championship's top scorer with 3-23. Cork'sJustin McCarthywas the choice forTexaco Hurler of the Year.
