The1989 Atlanta mayoral electionoccurred on October 3, 1989. Former mayorMaynard Jacksonwon a third non-consecutive term in alandslide victory.
Incumbent mayorAndrew Youngwas barred from seeking reelection due toterm limits.[1]
Since Jackson received amajorityin the general election, norunoff electionneeded to be held.

Campaign[edit]
In early August, Jackson's prime competitor, Michael Lomax, withdrew from the race.[2]Later that month, right before the qualifying deadline to enter the race, Hosea Williams entered the race, claiming that he wanted to prevent the election from becoming, "acoronationof Maynard ".[1]
The race drew little interest, and saw what was considered to be low turnout.[1]
