The1999 United States Open Championshipwas the 99thU.S. Open,held June 17–20 atPinehurst ResortCourse No. 2 inPinehurst, North Carolina.Payne Stewartwon his second U.S. Open and thirdmajor championship,one stroke ahead of runner-upPhil Mickelson.

After a birdie at the penultimate hole to regain an outright lead, Stewart sank a 15-foot (5 m) par putt on the final hole for 279 (−1) and avoided a Monday playoff.[5][6]He redeemed himself at the U.S. Open, after losing a four-stroke 54-hole lead theyear beforeinSan Francisco.[7][8][9]Stewart did not get a chance to defend his title in2000,as he died four months later in aplane crash.The U.S. Open was his eleventh and finalPGA Tourwin.

Major winnersTiger WoodsandVijay Singhwere in contention late in their final rounds, but each bogeyed and finished two strokes back, tied for third.

This was the first U.S. Open at Pinehurst, which returned in2005,2014,and once again in2024.Previously, it hosted thePGA Championshipin1936,theRyder Cupin1951,and theNorth and South Openfrom 1902 through 1951. More recently, it was the site of season-endingTour Championshipin1991[10]and1992.[11]
